Also, there's no need to call anyone an idiot - even if they are a Troll. There are certainly are some contradictions in what the Taroll does and says. We hope they eventually get some help to sort those things out.
Anyway, we're a bit off topic now. Let's keep this thread focused on discussions / questions / conversations relevant to banning.

In most cases, that's simple to do - so we do it. In some, as in the recent situation, it's a bit trickier. It's not quite as easy as "You are banned for saying bad words!" or something like that. It's more like you have been blocked for slowly getting more disrespectful of certain groups of Scratchers over time, and fanning flames. So there are some cases when we block Scratchers with a simple message in order to have a longer conversation with them in which we explain why they were blocked.
i know you said this a while back, but would there be a way to make it more clear, like a warning sent before banning to see if they shape up as opposed to straight out banning them. something about noticing them getting more disrespectful. maybe this message could be different in that it would show up even if you were viewing the forums and not the main site.

In most cases, there are warnings sent before an account is blocked. Occasionally, we make an exception, if the situation seems to call for it.

There has been confusion with that lately...

You know, I understand the banning and why you do it all, but do you really have to not let people see the projects they've uploaded? Some of the banned persons have very quality projects and it's quite sad to not even be able to see evidence that they were there.
i sooo agree

You should be able to see projects made by users who are blocked, as long as they weren't removed for being inappropriate. If you can't, then let us know in troubleshooting - that'd be a bug!

This may sound silly, but how DO you report some one?!

There are no silly questions - it's learning, all the same!
In the forums, in the bottom right of each post, there are some little links - if it's a post that you made yourself, they will say "Report, Delete, Edit, Quote". On other people's posts, they just say "Report, Quote" (unless the thread is closed, then it just says "Report"). To report something, you click the one that says "Report".
You can use the "Report" button for many things (here are a few that I can think of at the moment):
- A user is being mean/disrespectful to someone else
- Someone is "naming names" (eg - "He/she causes all the arguments - it wasn't us!")
- Inappropriate words!
- A discussion is getting heated - possibly becoming a flame war!
- SPAM!
(this can be commercial advertising, or plain random (eg (in a thread about the "broadcast" blocks) "hi i like pancakes. i have a cat and three goldfish")
- The thread should be in another topic (eg - "Please view my projects!" shouldn't be in Advanced Topics - it would fit better in "Show and Tell")
- If it's your thread, and you want the title changing (typos!
)
- If it's your thread, and you want it closed.
- If it goes against the Terms of Use in some way other than being disrespectful (eg - someone sharing emails and phone numbers - or asking others to!
)
- If it discusses things that could cause an argument (eg - "[insert political party here] is the best - it's silly to vote for anyone else!")
That's all the uses for it that I can think of at the moment...

Hey PwnedPerson, if you need to report someone, you can do like what Wolfie1996 said above and hit the report link next to the offending post. If the behavior is outside the forums, you can report that incident to the the Scratch Team here.

@cheddergirl and wolfie1996
Thank you for the help! Luckily, the person I was going to report was noticed by a moderator, so everything is okay. Thanks again!<switch to costume[

Not at all, marky. Not at all.
Thankyou.

I have a question: If you get banned, how do you go on the site to use the 'Contact Us' button to ask why you are banned or give a reason or whatever?
When you try to access the site, you get a "You're banned" message with a link to the "Contact Us" page.
Or something like that.

Thanks! I have put comments down that weren't 'allowed' but I never got it. I mean the words were fine, but, ya know. This helps, and next i'll check my WORDs. lol

Thanks for posting this.
What I'd like to see on the forums is a "warning meter" type system. Depending on how bad the offense is the warning meter would go up some, and once it reaches a certain point you get blocked for only a few days to a week. They would gradually get longer from there, so there would be no three-month blocks on a first offense (see MidnightWarrior's post).
I think something like that would work. Suggestions are welcome.
This idea is fantastic! Why don't you email it to the Scratch team so it could possibly get taken into account?
Offline
Yes, we're thinking of making changes to the blocking system. Perhaps something more like a yellow card - red card system, similar to what they do in the world cup? When we come up with a new proposal, we'll post it in the Suggestions section to get feedback from the community.

I'm just wondering: You said that if somebody has been banned, you're willing to give them a second chance if you think they're willing to change. But does it stay in your book forever that they've been banned? For example, if they have been banned, can they never become a moderator? Forgive and forget, I say!
We agree, everyone makes mistakes from time to time - moderators and Scratch Team are no different! So forgiving is important - whether it's us forgiving those who've been banned, or Scratchers forgiving other Scratchers who did or said something they felt was mean.
So, while it is possible to recover from it, doing something to get banned really doesn't help one's chances at being a moderator or curator.![]()
But with time and patience (usually - lots and lots of patience) all these things can be overcome. So I could certainly imagine someone who was once banned becoming a curator or moderator.Did I say patience enough times? patience, patience, patience....
hi lightnin. I am having a lot of trouble with the user [username removed by moderator]. She had an account called [username removed by moderator] and has been banned from all her accounts. she keeps making more to terrorize me by sending disturbing and rude comments. please help!

Hi samid11 - please don't mention accounts by name. If you want to report a user, just user the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of each page. Thanks!

I think that if you're banned there should be something that says Banned under your user name.
