Math Expectations. .

Honestly, I'm annoyed. We got rid of 6th Grade, (Year 7) algorithm, and move on to Algebra. [We already did Geometry].
Anyways, I was really excited until I looked at our first question:

NYRS: Grade 6 MATHEMATICS wrote:

The sum of two consecutive odd integers is 124. What are the integers?

hmm , really?
The two integers are 61 and 63.

x+x+2=124. x=61. 61+2=63. Duh.
  61
+ 63
-------
124

Re: Math Expectations. .

Algebra isn't hard IMO, it's just the amount of work you have to do.

I know, I was angry to see it was so easy. I expected stuff like

Y=45X-0.5X^2

Thats simple algebra anyway.

Re: Math Expectations. .

It's not hard. You could also do that with a fun little formula:
x-1+x+1=124.
Then you solve it down.
2x=124
x=62

And therefore, x-1 and x+1 are 61 and 63. It gets harder when you get further into the math curriculum.

You could also do

x=61
(x*2)+2=124
x+2=63

Nonono, some of you misunderstand. He or she means that it's too easy. That does look easy for eleven or twelve years old. We did stuff like

( x + a ) (  x + b) = 0.

lol, wait to you get to factoring.

x^2-64
(x+8)(x-8)

45x^2+99x+54  yikes
9(5x^2+11x+6)
9(x+1)(5x+6)

Lets try x=10
x^2-64 10^2=100. 100-64=36.
(x+8)(x-8) 10+8=18. 10-8=2. 18*2=36.

45x^2+99x+54 45*10=450. 450^2=202500. 202500+99=202599. 202599*10=2025990. 2025990+54=2026044.
9(5x^2+11x+6) 5*10=50. 50^2=2500. 2500+11=2511. 2511*10=25110. 25110+6=25116. 9*25116=226044.
9(x+1)(5x+6) 10+1=11. 9*11=99. 5*10=50. 50+6=56. 99*56=5544.

Just wait to you get to... I won't say- it might scare you.  big_smile  You're lucky compared to my 6th grade experience. My school didn't have any accelerated classes and they wouldn't let 6th graders take 7th grade math. We did simple stuff all year- you know what I mean- fractions, factors, primes, (very) simple geometry, etc. At the end of the year we did some "algebra." In other words, we solved simple (as in 4x+5=25) linear equations  tongue  Yuck.

I guess I was lucky to live when we did quadratic equations when I was 12.  hmm  Are the schools trying to make our children have empty brains?

yes, its a royal pain in the @$$.  hooray for calculators.  lets leave math to the machines and go out and play kickball.

but actually, the question was directed at composer, the dude who was complaining bout easy problems.  be careful what you wish for man.

Yeah, I figured you weren't asking me, but most of them probably don't know what you're talking about when you say rref, so I decided to answer you  lol  Have you ever had to do regression without a graphing calculator? That's worse, I'd say. And I'm only in PreCalc, so I know it'll get way harder. It's a good thing I like math.  big_smile

That math may be wrong
61 and 63 aren't consecutive

Or what, they are? I don't get maths. Or maybe my definition of consecutive is wrong

Re: Math Expectations. .

Everyone always makes a big deal about algebra being hard.  It's not that hard.  Even in advanced maths, it's still pretty easy.  Or maybe I'm just good at maths!  tongue

In fact, algebra is just like using the variables in Scratch!

<when I receive[ Maths problem
<think[ x=7
<if><<  <not>  <( x   <=> 7   )>>>
<set{ Emotion  }to(  mad
<play sound[ groan
<say[ This is too hard!
<else>
<play sound[ Homer_woohoo
<say[ Woohoo!
<end>
<set{ π    }to( being eaten

pretty sure consecutive means you know, one away.  otherwise all numbers would be consecutive.

Uh, yeah.

Consecutive odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9...

Consecutive numbers would include all of it, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...

Blade-Edge wrote:

They are consecutive odd numbers. i.e., you take out the evens, and then find what the consecutive numbers are.
