What's up with all of the banning?

A lot of famous Scratchers have been banned over the past week. Why? What did they do? Who's next?

They've been rotten, mean, and nasty. Or at least some of them.

Re: What's up with all of the banning?

I have no idea.

I could list people, but I want to be nice. Just look for all the really good Scratchers.

Most are banned.

Not me. Wait... I don't fit into that category. XD

Saying Hello without the o technically isn't a swear.

I've been expecting this and have begun concoction of a next to be banned list. I will not post the list so don't ask.

Just don't be disrespectful. Prove to the Scratch Team that you deserve another chance.

Seems like there is a lot of confusion about blocking (and don't believe everything you hear!) So I made a thread to address this: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=35090

One question. Not to sound biased, but if lonwol proves himself responsible, would you un-ban him?

As I mention in the thread I linked to above, we only discuss these situations with the account holders. But in general we're happy to give Scratchers another chance as long as we feel we can trust them to be respectful.

THat's why I put quotes around it. According to my parents, and apparently the Scratch team, it's bad enough.

You were banned? I'm really sorry to hear that. ( 8/) No offense, but why?

I yelled at him. I think I reported him. Kill me, before the crowd starts yelling at me.

No, no. You did the right thing. He was mean to you, and you reported him. (The yelling back was probably not too too bad, because I know you'd not say anything SUPER hurtful. Even if you did, I still like you.  lol  Just kidding.  tongue

Re: What's up with all of the banning?

I don't see what's wrong with swearing.  They're only words, and freedom of speech is important.  Are they offensive?  Anything is potentially offensive.  It's all a matter of context.  If the media/government/authority stops treating them like they are so terrible by censoring them, then they wouldn't be considered vulgar at all, and they would just be common words.  It's BECAUSE they are censored that they are so shocking and offensive.  They are just sounds.  Censorship is ridiculous.

You're statements are true, but we run into the problem of the diverse ages on Scratch. Some parents will find it unacceptable for their children to be on a website that uses swears and it could seriously hurt younger children.

This doesn't mean I think that the whole idea of swearing is much-to-do-about-nothing, because it us, but we don't shouldn't take the risk of hurting the feelings of any kids or making Scratch an unfriendly environment for children.

I admire your staunch support of personal freedoms but I must disagree.  Words are not just sounds.  Words are thoughts - and they can certainly inflict pain.  We really want Scratch to be a friendly and safe place for people of all ages.  Swearing, by it's nature, is intended to shock and/or threaten which sets the wrong tone for friendly discussion.  I hope that helps explain the reasons for the swearing restrictions.

I did once...  neutral

But that was months ago, back when I proposed that the Text-Based Games be deleted. There were insults - I shouted.  sad

That was the only private message I've received - and I hope it to be the last.

Not to mention during the TBG mod election you were like "IT'S ALL [ahem]!!!!" because you / your brother wasn't winning

By the way, did you get warnings for that?
Nevermind don't answer

This is a good example of the kind of tone we want Scratchers to avoid using. No matter what happened in the past, there's no good reason to fan the flames in the present. It's not just Lord-Sprites and those who were banned. Lot's of Scratchers need to take a step back and remember that it's important to be respectful with their words.

Actually, that word would be exemplar. So "Yep, that's me the exemplar. Exampler isn't a word.
