screen
i have just realized this:
if something is off screen (over 480x)
scratch shows it
maybe fix this for scratch 2.0
also instead of realsing huge new patches with masses of new stuff maybe every time you make a new block allow people to download?

That has been the case since the Dark Ages of Scratch. When the King of MIT ordered his pheasants to create a program, these townspeople decided: "Hey! If this is going to be off-screen, then I can't see it! We've got to find a way for people to still drag it around if it's off screen!" So they made it so that it stayed. I agree it was a bad idea.
You can always fix it by making the sprite hide itself when it goes off-screen, though. Or putting a border around the screen.
