awesome.  I made the classic recursive tree, but it redraws in a loop so you change parameters interactively.  Fun.  Here's the project (which has to be loaded into Jens' BYOB app for it to work):

BYOB 2.99 alpha

by now most you know already now this: Today Brian Harvey and I launched

   byob.berkeley.edu

where you can download the new (and even more experimental) version I've been dropping hints about lately. What's new? Well, first look at Brian's intro right here and check the BYOB 3 forum thread. Oh, and fellow Scratcher soupoftomato has already posted a nice first tutorial.

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

I love BYOB 2.99 alpha!! It has already helped my do things I can't do in Scratch.

So, I'm at school and my teacher assigns a book report. She says that we can do it however we like, and she will grade us during presentation. So some people think about making cakes, some people want to make Power Points, board games, and the list goes on. I figured it would be fun to make a Scratch project book report. It would make school so much more fun! But the teacher forgot to download Scratch on her computer, so she said to try sharing it in technology class. The computers in technology class have an outdated version of Scratch, so they could not read the file. So I go home and find BYOB 2.99 Alpha, and improve the book report, and compile it so I could share my project with the class! The teacher loved it so much that she didn't count it late!

Hi henley,

how cool is that?! So you actually submitted an .exe with a presentation you made with BYOB 2.99? Wow! Man, I wish we had a website for sharing these projects...

(I'm really relieved by this report, because - tell you a secret, I didn't get around to really testing the compiler for the new BYOB yet, whew!)

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

I never posted here before (my awful english is one of the best reasons) but I feel forced to post, just to say three things:

1 - WOW
2 - Thanks
3 - At some future versions (more stable, etc) I'm really looking for some "File" blocks (Like the "Scratch with Lists+Files"  big_smile , image files importation to costumes), some sprite clonation or instantiation, and some Mesh blocks (Join, Host... with the future "list supported" sensor block it will great! If the list contains scripts on its items It could be something like RMI in Java  big_smile ).
I know that is too soon to make that kind suggestions but I'm looking the current potential with those features and... Oh dude  big_smile

Anyway, I want to thank again Jens and all the ppl of Berkeley who is involved.

[bugfix]

I just discovered and fixed an annoying bug that happens when you try to re-edit an existing block spec. So, if you have already downloaded the prototype, please do so once again and make sure the version number in the Extras-About dialog says BYOB 1.0.2. This does not affect any projects created with the original version.

Thanks!

My version number is 2.0.2

Are you talking about BYOB 3?

Because if so, you can discuss it on the forum thread for it:

It probably wouldn't be fair.  BYOB was written by an adult professional computer programmer, and BYOB3 had additional input from an adult university computer science instructor (me).  I think you'll have a more interesting contest if you limit it to kid Scratcher projects.

I don't quite understand how to make the blocks do anything. I'm trying to make one that changes the Blur radius of the sprite, but I can't seem to make  it do anything.

Sounds like a bug in a recent version of BYOB. You should be able to load any existing Scratch project to BYOB. Can you post the the non-working project to website and point me to it, then I'll investigate and fix. Thanks!

Re: ITopic: Build Your Own Blocks (BYOB)

If you uncheck the atomic box in the BYOB Block Creator (In the newest version), does that just mean that the block is simply a easy way of moving a group of blocks? Or will it still be obsolete?

A custom block is basically like any stack of blocks, you're right. But it can take arguments, and that several instances of the block can run at the same time in different stacks.
