It also seems weird to me that you have a block with only a dropdown in it. They could've made just one command block with a dropdown menu to select what it should do...

This is only concerning variables...  hmm

I do want to easily replace variables, what if you could just right click the reporter and select a different variable that way? Just like the comparison blocks...

It would be nice to have it like that. It's annoying having to get different blocks instead of just being able to copy them.

This would have been really useful when I made The Data Workshop especially- it has 27 variables and 14 lists- a real pain to work with. I'm sure  there are projects out there with way more of each. Imagine how this change would help their creators!

You guys know we love us some efficiency - so this idea has some charm to it!
But there is one situation where it raises concerns....
Imagine if you were a new Scratcher, and you just made your first variable (woo hoo!).
You press ok and it appears as a block!
But then you make a second one.... but where is it? All you see is the first variable block. How will you know to click the variable block to view the pull down, and select the next variable?

That's one thing, but here's mine:

By clicking the Change View button, it'd change it from the 1.4 way to the suggestion's way (and the other way around). The default (when you start up Scratch) would be the 1.4 way - that way you'd see all the variables, and when you click the button you see it change. New users should be able to work it all out.

What do you think?  smile

EDIT: I just realized a problem - with the different views, there are different blocks! So if the view was changed, all of those variable blocks in scripts and such would have to transform. Is that a problem, or can it be done?

Ah... I hope this comes!

It would clear up half my Scratch workspace clutter.

You know me. Messy all the time.  wink

I thought of a simple fix.

The variable in the "1.4 view" would look just like the ones in the "2.0 view," but the drop down would automatically be set to each variable. I'm not sure if that explanation makes sense...

I think I get it.... So when you were updating your code, you could just click the variable block and pull down the list to change the variable. Hmmm... that would make it a bit simpler. There is still some potential for confusion with new users....

Although like Lightnin said, there is a potential for confusion with new users, this is a great idea. It is clean, and it makes much more sense!  wink  Nice idea, I hope we can work this out so it will be easy for everyone to use.

Nice! But it'd look a bit odd to have a variable block made of the drop-down menu when you can't change the variable...  hmm

Maybe you can change it. But if it's in the "block selection area" (is that what it's called?), it will automatically reset to the original.
