I can't remember if they happen or not, but how about these:
   • When you get hit, your ship flickers
   • When you get hit, you're invincible for a short time

And another idea: A map that shows where everything is! And it includes where every ship is - including the bosses.

1. Already have it.
2. Would slow things down VERY much. How about every time you blow up?
3. Thats never really been the way things worked out... this isn't like Guardian II. I might add a "Boss Ahead!" Warning like in S65's "Requiem or Thunder" (inspiration of this whole thing).  smile

Do you have multiple laser types? So, when customising, you can choose a powerfull laser, or a widespread one, or a slow recharging but REALLY strong one.

A kind of enemy remains on screen, firing at you until you hit it?

Mini-Bosses?

A level with asteroids slowly floating around that damage you if you touch them?

Can pick up multiple weapons and press Z to fire them and X to swap between them, like in airfix dogfighter.
Or make it a 3-D game.

Different kinds of ships you can choose with different statistics (speed, armor, etc.).
Side missions to complete.
Wingmen.
An sniper enemy that shoots at you with its crosshair; player will have to avoid the crosshair until they find the enemy.
The ability to switch between weapons.
A shop between levels.
A deep storyline with great animated and voiced cutscenes.
Midlevel bosses?
An enemy with a laser.
