Solution for "Return of the Games"

Well, the dispute about whether scratch should be art or games has gone so high lately I think I have a suggestion.

Maybe there should be a section on the "Projects" section of the website, that lets you choose for "Art" and another for "Games". Categories. Then there shouldn't be any disputes.

What do you think?

Edit:
-With subcategories
-On the same site
-Under "Projects" section
-Tags are used to sort type of project under the categories in projects

So that if someone want to see a certain type of project they can.

Re: Solution for "Return of the Games"

It's a good thought, but not all projects fit into either "game" or "art" and some might fit into both. So what would you do with all the OS's, calculators, tutorials, etc.?

I know. I was just about to edit this post and add subcategories within these big categories too. Such as some of the ones you stated. And, you could check which one it goes under when you are about to upload the project. Almost, like the current tags.

The categories could be:
-Art, Beginning Animation&Other Projects Without Much Programming
-Games, OSes&simulations
-Other

Seperation doesn't seem like a good idea to me.  hmm

It doesn't have to be separated. It can be on the same site. Just add topics under the "Projects" section of this site.

Ooooooooor we could make tagging projects with the default tags upon uploading required. :3

I like your idea. Can't stand the artists. It's just 09'ers and 08'ers that do this obnoxious art. (oh snap, did I just say something extremely controversial again?)

No. Segregation at its maximum.

Yep, as webgal mentioned, the default tags are enough to differentiate different types of projects.

Midnightleopard: Nope, no, zip, none, and nothing about that statement was remotely correct. There are '07er artists, for one. Two, the art isn't obnoxious. Scratch is for both programs, animations, and art. Cough.

It may be on the same site, but sorting projects into different areas would seperate Scratchers too... wouldn't it?

Yep, it would be separation (with the fourth letter as an "a," not an "e").

It was originally made for games and animations. Just people keep posting art so Scratch is now half programming and half DA. Besides, it's Imagine Program Share, not Imagine Draw Share.

I agree with Chris and Cocoanut.

Drawing is fine. You who don't like are just jelous because you don't have the skill? Well, sorry about that. You like games, that's fine. Just stop making artist pity themeselves. It doesn't work, m'kay? Deviantart is NOT like Scratch. Believe me.

DA is for art. Scratch is for games and stuff like games, not ameatur hamster drawing attempts. I don't get why you don't get it. Scratch was made for GAMES, yes that's right, games. If you want to make art, search art sites on Google and stop bugging the people who agree with what Scratch was made to be for.

Scratch is not meant for just games!! It's meant for different types of media! Music. Games. Art. Writing. Animation. Stimulations. If people want to share art on Scratch, well I'll be darned, they can.

Not just games, it's meant to be an easy to use and learn programming tool.

I think animations in Scratch are fine, but not projects that are just a pic with music, or annoucement projects. Think of Newgrounds, their users use Flash to create games and animations, but not single pictures. So what should really be off Scratch are projects that have no programming involved (my music projects have nearly no programming involved, which is why I want to start posting them in the forums or in the Newgrounds audio portal).

Must I yet again bring up the fact that Andres himself delivered the message that art is, was, and will be a part of Scratch?

I agree. Use the forums if you want to say you'll be gone for the next 5 hours, not hog the front page for 2 weeks for something that won't matter tomorrow.

Re: Solution for "Return of the Games"

You're exaggerating. Plus, annoucements don't get on the front page that much anymore.

Re: Solution for "Return of the Games"

I just want to note that right now on the front page all of the most loved projects are games. Also, all of the featured projects right now are interactive.

Scratch was NOT created ONLY for games. The main goal of the Scratch website is to be a space where people can express themselves creatively using digital technology. This includes art, games and many more categories.

Most of the sections of the front page are defined by the community. No one is forcing people to click on projects. Instead of competing, I'd love to see more collaboration between different types of creators. For example, some of my favorite games are those with very original art.

As it always was. Scratch could not be the same as it is without it's variety.

Re: Solution for "Return of the Games"

I think they should have a button like this at the top of the front page:
[Change Project Type]
All
Games
Animations
Art
Music
Writing

And they show the Most Viewed, Most Loved, Most Remixed, etc. of THAT genre.

And I UNDERSTAND that kind of has been suggested.
