Yeah, Steve's excuse was that third party software leads to poorer programs but its clear that they just want to control everything. Seeing as how there are tons of garbage app store apps out there already this response is invalid.

I'm trying to convince my cousin's family that Microsoft is so much better than Apple. I keep coming up with 'Apple Fails' lolz, this is a good one cuz my uncle loves Scratch =P wait 'til i tell him xD. But seriously, why would they take it off the app store? Apple Fail DX

They also banned the actionscript compiler, apparently.
Stupid apple.

BWOG - no, tools created with their tools are ofcourse still allowed. Their platform is improved by 3rd p apps and they get a30% revenue.
A long time ago, long before I was born, apple had cool stuff. They had macs and they invented the 'windows' concept we all use now. But they made one big mistake, that made Microsoft totally overpower Apple: they kept their products expensive.
They still do the same. iPhones are just not worth that much.
While they *invented* the os as we know it now, Microsoft was the very first with a widespread and functional mobile platform: Windows Mobile . It runs on thousands of devices, works on GPS systems, phones, PDA's everything. It supported multithreating from the very first day, (i have one) that means I can listen to music, browse the web, chat with an Instant Messenger, and have some huge calculation running in the background. It supports draggable *windows*. I can run 1990's DOS games on that thing (they look cool because the resolution of the device is low, these games look very sharp, not at all pixelated). They allow open apps, also ones that replace theirs. I tried 4 web browsers installed on my phone: IE, Opera, Skyfire, FireFox Mobile. (IE is actually a very good and lightweight but that's not important right now) Windows Mobile, i's wonderful.
And I am sure Android is just as cool.
But then iPhone OS, which isn't an OS but more of some kind of firmware, runs on 2 devices, is only able to play some music in the background, requires you to look at your chatting window or you get disconnected, forces you to buy a new one after a while. 3rd generation ? And oh, not to mention you pay about twice as much.
And that's just the device and OS. This 'no interpreter' policy is just rediculous. People, show them and don't buy any apple products. Spread the word, everywhere. Tell your parents and make them spread he word on their jobs. DESTROY APPLE

the reason apple does not like 3rd party apps is that its base code is a very well kept secret. it is the base reason why macs have virtually no viruses - because virtually nobody knows how their code works other than them. if apple were to let any old shmuck program their devices, they would become like windows computers - they get a new virus every other day of the week.

Actually, a lot of Apple's source code is open:
http://www.apple.com/opensource/
Making source code open generally makes it safer and more secure, because more eyes can see it, and find and fix vulnerabilities. That's one reason why there are almost no viruses that affect Linux or Mac.

I thought it was that Macs had more advanced code so that's why there are less games and viruses - because it was harder to program.

I'd like to point out historical issue.
The world first window system is Smalltalk. It's a direct ancestor of Scratch and Scratch is written by it. We may proud of this fact. Check out the following paper, "Personal Dynamic Media" written by Alan Kay and Adele Goldberg in 1977.

You may find it describes just we are doing now.

There's ways around their limits:
1: Distribute the application via the ad-hoc distribution system
- maximum of 100 users
- apparently more ad-hoc users allowed for "enterprise" accounts but requires DUNS number, 500+ employees, etc
2: Distribute via Cydia
- Limits Scratch users to jailbroken users
3: Distribute the code for individual developers to compile and build for their own iPhones
- requires $99/year development fee for each user
- combine with #1 and you've got a sure-fire way to get Scratch out to people (have people pool their dev accounts to give ad-hoc access to Scratch)
Just a few ideas.

The answer is simple. One of you must get hired by apple as a programmer
Then you can put it back, because of the....whatever they said on the first page

ok... But wasn't it the first os with windows?
Smalltalk is a language, an environment and an OS. So Scratch runs on a virtual machine.
Jobs and Apple guys visited Xerox PARC in 1979 and watched Smalltalk. He said later, "Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal".

Interesting...

If I wasn't a mod, I'd insult call Jobs and let it be removed by Paddle2See...

Can you run smalltalk right away on a pc as an OS? Imagine: Scratch OS...

why don't we (Someone) go make Scratch for windows mobiles and blackberry? I dont see why it would be removed then, but is it possible?
Plus this is another reason why i dont like Apple.

Well, from what I know about OS:
The first computer is UNIX, the large one, weighs 3 tonnes, and is bigger than a house with over 300 thousand buttons. Then, IBM, now Lenovo, made the PC. Personal Computer. It is like the old ones at your school and costs a lot. xD Anyways it was very slow. Then, came Bill Gates. He was a very smart man, and wanted everyone to have a PC. So, he "stole/bought" the PC from IBM, and made his own improvements into Windows. Then, there was Intel, the processor company, that most versions of windows use.
But at first, I forgot to say, Mac came before windows, and it had "windows", you know, the large box that you drag around, and it used a processor called Power PC. Bill Gates stole the window design from Mac, and he called his OS Windows, because he "claimed" that he was the first to discover the idea of windows.
Whew. My hands are hurting now.

Here is SqueakNOS. http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1762
I think Scratch OS is possible by this. But it requires additional work. Because some libraries of Scratch depend on host OS at the moment.

MarkyParky, it will not be taken out because everyone is allowed to make apps for Windows Mobile or Android. No apple-ish policy.
And you gave me a great idea. Hopefully, the creator of the iPhone app will release his source code now... It will work on Windows Mobile and jailbroken iphones, but also on DS's and whatever has squeak. See my 'Scratch on Mobile devices' thread in the Advanced Topics section
