Stricter Moderation

Moderators are letting spammers and trolls off the hook a bit too easily in my opinion.
Lets increase our control.

Also, lets ban "I quit" projects and threads.

These changes have been made in another site I go on, and I continually refer to this website to help them make their own changes as well.

Hear me mods.  smile

Re: Stricter Moderation

I think the moderators are doing perfectly fine.  hmm  But people create a lot of arguments - I think that if they got reprimanded, there would be less arguments. If they continue - well, harsher reprimanding!  lol

I don't see how you can ban "I quit" projects and topics - but yeah, I don't like them either.  hmm

Re: Stricter Moderation

How do you ban a topic? Or is it like the rules in Miscellaneous? If so, maybe... but sometimes it's good to let people know that you're moving on or leaving.

For arguments, well... a thread got closed yesterday, so that worked.  smile
And I'm not seeing much spam - except for the commercial type.

The next time I see one of those, I'm going to let out my feelings...  big_smile
I can picture it already:

What I want to say

Hi, Mr. Commercial Spammer! You're not allowed here. Guess what? You'll be BANNED! Isn't that great?

I'll delight in your leaving, and your post will be DELETED. I'm so happeh!

I-hate-commercial-spammmmmmmers, I-hate-commercial-spammmmmmmmmers, I hate...

I think that instead of talking to the Scratcher that was bad, they just ban them temporarily; it's easier for them and it doesn't take as long. Nothing big...

(Of course, that's just what I think.)

We hear you!
Spammers - do you mean commercial spammers? We generally block those as soon as we see them... If you mean Scratchers posting links to projects, etc.... we're more lenient in those cases. You can help by giving friendly advice to new Scratchers that spamming is not a good way to make friends / get views.

Trolls - Seems like we've had less trolling in the past few months since we introduced the new policy on miscellaneous, but maybe still too much? This of course depends on your definition of trolling.

Now and again, people will try to create drama for the sake of getting attention, or because they are bored. As long as it's not too disruptive or disrespectful, we try to take it easy, and let things play out on their own. Often the dramatists figure out that in the long run, creating drama is not a good way to get popular.

Moderation is tricky - more art than science if you ask me. On the one hand, we want Scratchers to have a lot of freedom to be creative. On the other, it's important that the community keeps its safe and friendly feel, otherwise people won't want to participate and share their ideas. So we're always trying to keep a balance between these two factors.

If you have anymore feedback about moderation, please keep the discussion going! (Unless it's about a situation involving particular Scratchers or mods - in which case, please use the contact us link to let us know.)

Scratch On!

Ooh, that explained a lot!  smile
But what about threads that have gone far off-topic? It seems to happen a lot.  hmm

Re: Stricter Moderation

In my opinion, i think that when i finnaly leave, probably when i go to Universaty or I move onto another programming language, I'll be making a project, but it won't be "I QUIT!" Project where i shout at all the people who have been mean to me or where I start crying and complaining about all the bullys and how Scratch has changed for the worse. So theres different types, the ones which are "Farewell and hope you all have a good life" type projects and the dreaded "I QUIT!"

Re: Stricter Moderation

The reason why "I Quit" projects are annoying is because it's a circle that goes like this:

User makes "I Quit" project -------> Other users try to get User not to quit
.............|.........................................................|
.............|.........................................................|
.............|.........................................................|
.............^After about 3 months... <--------------User doesn't quit

Then about another 6 months later they do it again, how many times has a well known scratcher (try geuss which one) has said they would quit but hasn't.

Good point / idea! I imagine that kind of project would be more like a Scratch Graduation project. Something that says I had a good time here and learned a lot, but now it's time to move on....
