Hey! Wolfie1996, here!
I’ve been asked to make some tutorials on modifying the ScratchFrame in Scratch 1.4. In this tutorial, I’m going to teach you how to change the colours of the ScratchFrame. If you don’t want to read all of this, there’s an audio/visual tutorial here, also made by me (it’s not as in-depth, but it gives you an idea of how this works
).

Before we begin, I’ll just cover some of the vocabulary that I’m going to use in this Tutorial:
• Shift-Click – Hold down the “shift” key (looks like a wide arrow pointing upwards) on your keyboard, and click with the left mouse button at the same time.
• Alt-Click – Hold down the “Alt” key (has “Alt” written on it – left of the space bar) on your keyboard, and click with the left mouse button at the same time.
• ScratchFrame – The bit of Scratch that you normally see when making projects. Includes the stage, pallets, sprite library, etc.

OK, so let’s begin!
1. Shift-click the “R” in the Scratch logo (top left of the screen – same way as if you were activating Mesh).
2. Select “turn fill screen off” (just like Mesh, huh?).
3. Now here’s where it becomes different. Alt-Click on the grey background of the pallet that says “Movement”, “Control”, “Looks”, “Sensing, etc... two times.
4. Some icons should appear around the pallet that you just Alt-Clicked. One of these is a red circle, with a black square, and three red lines. {i]Ordinary[/i] left-click that icon.
5. A menu will appear. Find the option that says “change color...” (that is probably the only time I will use the non-British spelling of “colour”
), then click on it.
6. A colour picker will appear. Select a colour, and the pallet that you selected earlier should change to that colour. If it does not, please check that you have followed the previous steps (you might have only Alt-clicked the pallet once – try Alt-clicking it twice). If it does: Congratulations, you’ve just modified part of the ScratchFrame
.
7. Now, you can repeat this on most things in the ScratchFrame. Here’s a quick guide as to how many times you will need to Alt-click each piece:
• Block Storage: 3 times
• Blocks: 4 times
• Sprite Library: 4 times
• Stage-side Library: 3 times
• Area between Library and Stage: 3 times
• Area that stores sprite details (direction, name, etc) : 2 times
• Script-making pallet: CANNOT BE CHANGED USING THIS METHOD
• Background of Save, Share, etc: 2 times
• Try experimenting with other areas
8. Once you’re happy with the colours, shift-click the “R” in the Scratch Logo again, and select “turn fill screen on”
9. You can save the changes to this by shift-clicking the “R”, and selecting “save image for end-user”. However, this freezes Scratch on my computer – I am not sure if it is Scratch that does not allow it, or if something is affecting my PC.
10. Use as normal

Is it possible to change all of the blocks in one category a color at the same time. Like all of the Motion blocks a different color, without having to do them all separately?

Yes! It is completely possible! Just edit Scratch-Objects -> ScriptableScratchMorph (classes) -> blockSpecs -> blockColorFor:

I'm not sure... I've tried to work this one out myself... maybe there's another way of approaching this that I haven't noticed..?
Oh - thanks MathWizz!

Me too! But it gets scary! Fortunately, if I completely destroy my copy of Scratch, I can always uninstall then reinstall it on my computer! (I hope!)
All glory to the Hypno-Toad.Offline
I never save what I change. I just screenshot each step, then quit.
