...::: DiscScratchr 1.1 :::...
New DiscScratchr 1.1 alpha released! If you're interested in beta testing or working at the aplication itself, please go to this forum topic...
DiscScratchr allows you to select a number of Scratch projects stored on your computer, and turn them into all files you need to burn a disc.
When you do, this disc will have the following features:
- Automatic Autorun
- Graphical project-selection menu
- Scratch projects open up in Presentation mode
- When you hit ESC or press the grey arrow the project closes and you see the menu again
- Button to explore files on a disc
> > > Download! < < <
No Scratch installation is required to run this disc, so you can take them anywhere. You could use it to...
- Create an archive of your Scratch Projects
- Show Scratch Projects in a classroom
- Share your Scratch projects with friends who don't want to install the Scratch application on their computer.
- etc
This new version is compatible with Scratch 1.3.1 and older but is still in it's very first release. Please, just test and tell me if you can find any bugs. It is not recommended to burn it to discs already .
How to use
Start up DiscScratchr by opening discscratchr.exe. It is a wizard so it is very easy to use.
When the wizard finishes a bunch of files are created in the "\disc" directory. (can be opened automatically) Use any cd burning program to burn these onto a data cd. When it is inserted into any other pc (with or without Scratch) the disc will AutoRun and show the menu.
System requirements
Windows 95, 98(SE), NT, 2000, ME, XP, 2003, Vista. - Every windows
discScratchr is compatible with scratch 1.3.1 and older, but every Scratch version starting from 1.3 is only compatible with Windows XP and newer.
Technical Notes
This version is completely new, none of the files of discScratchr 0.5 are used.
I gave up on those nasty batch scripts, the whole application is created with a free programming language called JustBASIC. It is very easy to learn/use...
The menu is also made with JustBASIC.
For running the scratch projects, I modified the Scratch 1.3.1 source code.
All JustBASIC source files are included in "\resource\source". Feel free to use.
For a discussion about the technical part of discScratchr, see this forum topic
Am I allowed to use the Scratch buttons in the menu?
And the (copyrighted) Scratch cat?
Oops... I forgot the note "Scratch is made by...". I'll add in the next release.

PS: All posts in this topic up to #56 (shown in the upper right corner) are about discScratchr 0.5 (an old version) and might be outdated.

JSO --> seems to work fine with me. I have XP. It's a really great idea!

Sounds a lot like Jens' Chirp. What's the difference?
Jens' Chirp is a 'remix' of Scratch. With Jens' scratch2exe it is possible to convert one project into an EXE file. discScratchr is a tool to put all Scratch project files in a specified folder on a disc, with an autorun menu (a menu that starts up when you put the disc into the computer). When you click the green arrow to run a project, a stripped scratch/chirp version will start up - all included on the disc - in presentation mode, and when you press ESC or you click the gray arrow to quit presentation mode, you get back to the menu.

I don't think I'll be able to download it... Did you use Flash to make this?
Everyone will be able to download this. And i think discScratchr will work for everyone with a windows version XP or later (at least I hope so...)
Yes, I also used Flash to create discScratchr, in combination with Chirp and complicated DOS Batch files. The result is a standalone exe file so you don't need Flash to run it.

Whoaho!, Joren, this is absolutely fantastic and amazing. Looks like the perfect way to showcase a set of projects, say, from a class! A really terrific idea, I believe this will be very usable for many people. Great work!

I just downloaded it to my (ancient ME) computer. It works beautifully! I especially like the nice looking graphical menu it creates. The wizard is also very well structured and intuitive to use. Cool!

I tested discScratchr on my new Vista PC - it does not work. I will post a new version when it works on Vista and XP...
EDIT: oops... it does. Be careful with long filenames though: extract to C:\discScratchr or something like it.

This is a fabulous idea JSO! I downloaded it - works perfectly!

dingdong, projects will run exactly as they would when you would run presentation mode from Scratch. The speed of the project depends on the speed of the computer where you run your project, just like it does when using the scratch program.

I think it currently only works for windows versions ME, 2000, XP and later, because of the DOS scripts included (rd instead of deltree, for example). Can someone please test it on Vista, or their version of XP or an older Windows version?
I could I got vista

Ok, i tried again on vista, and it really works. (everything is tested, special character reming, copying, long filenames etc...)
I might ran an old version that was still on my pc...
Can anyone still test it?
btw, do you have any suggestions, to improve discScratchr? Does discScratchr needs project thumbnail support (I think it should be possible to rip of thumbnails from projects using a modified version of the Scratch source code, and load them automatically into the exe file)?

Oh. That made me feel pretty stupid.

You don't need to download chirp!
Just download discScratchr by clicking on the enourmous image above, it's a program on it's own.
