I want to know, too.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I followed the instructions at http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Linux_Installer and https://launchpad.net/~scratch/+archive/ppa
I am finished with the instructions, but I don't have Scratch installed, and I don't see it in the Synaptic Package Manager.
What do I do?

If you don't see it in the Synaptic Package Manager then I'm not sure...

You might have to reload your packages to make sure the new repositories have had a chance to kick in. In synaptic, just click the "reload" button in the upper left. Then search for Scratch with the big magnifying glass on the right. That should do it! If not, go to Settings > Repositories > Other Software, and make sure you see the following line with a checkbox next to it:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/scratch/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
If you don't, click Add to add and copy and paste that line in, then reload and search again.
Hope this helps! If you get stuck, post in this thread:

(I keep a closer eye on that one)

Here are the steps to install scratches on linux. as it is available for Windows and Mac.
Someone was nice enough to put together an installer for Linux.
This section shows how to install Scratch 1.2
1.Download the Scratch 1.2 Installer
2.(A)The file will be saved to your Desktop as Scratch1.2.tgz
(b)CD to the directory (your Desktop) where you downloaded the Scratch Installer.
If you're installing for ByteWorks, Be sure to be logged in as student if you're creating an image or installing on a student machine.
(c)To be safe, run the following command:
[blocks]md5sum Scratch1.2.tgz | grep -v 38ea82b4b2b2139b49b5afccd3a84f2d[/blocks]
You should not get any output from this command. (No news is good news) If there's any output from the command, you should not install this file. 8-O
Unzip the tarball using the following command:
[blocks] tar -xvf Scratch1.2.tgz [/blocks]
1.You should now see scratch_installer.pl and another tar file called Scratch.tar.gz
2. Run the installation Perl script using the below syntax:
[blocks]./scratch_install.pl[/blocks]
* You will be prompted to install Scratch to the $HOME directory. If you want to install Scratch to another location, see “Customizing” below.
* The installation script will now un-zip Scratch's files, and create a launcher on your Desktop. You should see “Scratch Cat” on your desktop.
* Double-click the cat and Scratch should start.
Thanks.

I use Ubuntu 8.10. How do I get Scratch??
My question: Are you 64-bit or 32-bit? I made an article on this 'wiki' explaining how.

If your looking for a Linux version of Scratch then go to this link:
http://tcpdpodcast.org/programming.html
Then click on the word download in step one.
Then download and save it. After that just find it in your files and open it and then you can run scratch regularly!
Scratch is 100% crash proof but it dosen't tell you if you saved your project on this ubuntu version.
I'm using windows but I also installed Scratch on our Linux Ubuntu 8.10 and 10.0 and it works perfectly!
Hope this Helps!
