how do you get rid of the white background in microsoft paint?

you can use the paint bucket tool and fill a color.
but if want it to be transparent, (shown by checkers) so that it's clear around the shape, you have to use another program. (paint is extremely old and simple.) I can suggest some in a little while. there's some free ones and ones that you can use online. this might be one that will work http://www.pixlr.com/

A good, free and easy to use editor is Paint.NET: http://www.getpaint.net
And it supports transparencies. ;D

If you combine Gimp and Paint.Net you get Photoshop CS3
