Its just glass fiber, thats why. There are upsides and downsides though, since light travels slower through glass compared to copper wire and electric current
Glass = 2*10E8
Copper = 3*10E8
But the upside to firberoptic is that they can pack more information into it, and its cheaper than copper.

My old internet (back in '08) did 0.1 MB/S...I had that service since 2000 i think
