I downloaded the source code. Now what do I do? How do I open the source code?

What do you mean?
You don't "open" source code, you compile or edit it.
I've taken a long hiatus, but I still visit sometimes. Give me some time to answer any messages you post on my projects!

Copy the Scratch exe (on windows) into the folder with the source code, then double-click it to launch the VM.
EDIT: A useful tip: 'Scratch.ini' will appear the first time you do this. to change the window title from 'Quit?!', add the line 'WindowTitle=' and then the title to the .ini file, like 'WindowTitle=Based on Scratch from the MIT Media Lab'
