I don't really think the differences are that major, so I'm not getting it.

I downloaded only part of it, which is the beta version of Microsoft Visio 2010. Finding the the right template in the interface is a pain, but, other than that, it seems to work really well when it comes to manipulating drawings - the fact that the format of the drawing files are still compatible with older versions of Visio is a plus.

I think you're a bit mixed up with extensions. Visio is used to create data diagrams, so the files used for Visio (which are called "drawings") have the extension .vsd. This extension hasn't changes since 2003, so anything created in Visio 2010 will work in older version of Visio except 2002 or lower.
