I think I can help you with that.
Make a few sprites, like a wall, and if your person is trying to go to the door which isn't at the side of the screen but actually a few layers away from the player, then just make him ghost, and then when he is in a wall, you can see him, and then when he's behind it, you can't, so you know he's behind the wall. Then he can turn right, and go to the door.

i get the layers part, but the rest i dont understand... should i play the first one to know what your talking about?

Yes, it is recommended, because you need to play the first game to actually understand the concept of the "ghosting".
