How do you sense objects and make your sprite stand on them?

I'm making a game right now and I need my sprite to jump on a counter! (also th floor but it already starts out on the floor)
And i cant figure out how to script it. I tried using repeat until touching color brown for when it jumps but it didnt work.

<when green flag clicked>
<forever if><touching color[ brown
<change y by( 1

That will get it to stay on the counter
