1. Go to the "variables" part on the left
2. click "Make a Block"
3. a window will pop up asking for block information. type what you want your block to say with text areas starting with the % symbol. for example : Multiply %first by %second
4. Click OK
5. a new window will pop up with an editor on it. on the left, you can make variables that only apply to this block. on the right, you make the script for the block to follow. just drag blocks from the far left of the screen into this editor.
6. Click OK
7. Drag your new block into the regular script place and run it!

are you sure that you are in BYOB? if not go there, if you are make sure you are in the variables category. If these don't work:
1. Try switching between another category and the variable category.
2. Download a fresh version of BYOB.
If these don't work, you might want to try a different computer if one is available.

Here is another block-making tutorial, this one quite simple.
For a "previous costume" block, do this.
