Why Scratch won't be made for Xbox, Playstation, iPhone, iTouch, etc.

If you look at the Suggestions, you'll see a lot of Suggestions for making Scratch for numerous devices. This topic explains why Scratch won't be made for Xbox, Playstation, Wii, iPhone, iTouch, PSP, Nintendo DS - everything.

1. Why do you need Scratch for these devices anyway? For using game consoles (Xbox, Playstation, Wii), it isn't very convenient. And if you want Scratch portable, why not use a laptop? And you can do a lot of stuff on them, since they're actually a portable computer.

2. Why can't you just use the computer for Scratch instead? What requires you to use a different device instead?

3. How are you going to program? You need to drag and drop blocks, for one thing (but this should be no problem). The things that are worrying are things like the paint editor! It's not going to be very nice...

4. Programs won't work the same way. What would you use for the mouse cursor? The arrow keys? The right-click?

5. How will you get Scratch for some devices? You won't be buying Scratch in a shop. They will not sell it to you. Scratch is free.

6. How many of these devices support Java and Squeak? You need Java to view projects online, for one thing. But most importantly, Scratch needs Squeak, so if your device can't handle Squeak, you can't use Scratch.

7. Why would the Scratch Team bother? Why would they want to make Scratch for those devices anyway?

What gain would you get from having access to Scratch on your device? The only benefit is having Scratch portable. And you can use a laptop for that.

Please mention anything useful.

I think a lot of people are after a playback engine, not an editor. For example, if an iPhone/iPod playback engine existed, you could very easily design your Scratch program on a computer and then play it back on your mobile. The same goes for the other platforms you mentioned.

A Scratch iPhone player would be a great piece of software - but sadly one that also would take a lot of time to make.

Having a player would be great, but

1. What about projects that use the mouse? Or other things (but I'll move on).
2. There's nothing about programming with Scratch. People seem to want the actual program on there.

Finally something to calm the tsunami of suggestions for the iTouch!

I agree, however, game playback is what everyone wants.

Are you talking about playing it online, or downloaded? If you're talking about downloaded, answer this: how are you going to get it? You won't be buying Scratch in a shop, as Jonathanpb said.

But I don't have any of those gadgets, so inform me of anything that may have influence over this discussion.

Neither do I. I use my common sense for determining if Scratch will work with those projects or not.

Re: Why Scratch won't be made for Xbox, Playstation, iPhone, iTouch, etc.

I must say I agree with you. Look at all the most recent iPod Touch posts and you'll see I've been telling everyone to look at the Resolved Suggestions thread, and this one, and dig around the forums as well.

But for some of the reasons as to why don't make sense, mainly sixth and fourth. At least on the iPhone, you can download free applications from the App Store. Also on the iPhone, you can use its touch screen capabilities sort of like a mouse. So I'd recommend knocking those two off.

But all in all, I'd agree with you. You should probably add that the web player runs on Java, too, though. You have "how will it support Java?", but you don't have what thing actually uses Java.

I am pretty sure the Scratch Team won't bother but I have seen many users trying to use iPhone SD and OS to try to view Scratch projects on an iPhone or iTouch.

Fourth: Programs won't work the same way. What would use use for the mouse cursor? How will you click and drag things in your programs? Seriously.

Fifth: How will you type? This shouldn't be too hard; there are things like an on-screen keyboard. Just think about this.

Sixth: How will you get Scratch? Sure, some devices can connect to the internet, but I just want to point out something: You won't be buying Scratch in a shop. They will not sell it to you. Scratch is free. So how will you get it? You'll have to download it and try and put it into your device.

Seventh: How many of these devices support Java and Squeak? You probably won't be able to view projects. And Scratch needs Squeak, so if your device can't handle Squeak, you can't use Scratch on there.

Eighth: Why would the Scratch Team bother?

Please mention anything useful.

1. A DS or iTouch is a lot smaller than a laptop, plus I don't own a laptop.

2. Because it would be fun to make a video game on Scratch.

3. It wouldn't be very hard to use the stylus as a computer mouse. It seems pretty simple.

4. The touch screen solves this. The wii might work too.

5. The on-screen keyboard solves this, so this isn't much of a problem.

6. That is the biggest reason that it's not going to happen. The Scratch Team isn't going to put Scratch into market.

7. If this was somehow going to happen, Scratch would need to be reprogrammed entirely.

martianshark, some of my reasons can be solved, but those are just points. The ones that can't be solved are the ones about reprogramming Scratch and marketing it. It's just ridiculous.

I don't care (much) if it isn't... it's just that those people still post those topics...

I revised the topic post.

Also, I am sorry to bump this up, but suggestions are still going up and this topic needs to be visible for those people who are posting those topics.  sad

Bumping this up because people are still bumping up the Scratch for Nintendo Wii thing.

Finally someone made this... I have been trying to explain this to everyone for a while. Although I believe in app for scratch could be possible for the Ipod touch or iphone, allthough it is highly unlikely that it will be made.

It'd probally be possible, but just amazingly silly. Why would the Scratch Team bother anyway?

To get a bigger userbase
If it's made for stuff like this, it'll open Scratch to whole new audiences and stuff

A while back, I suggested they make Scratch a U3 application for Smart Drives
It was Ignored  sad

By ignored, I mean no one even looked at it

Mr_X, do you think the Scratch Team would make Scratch for those devices with your reasons? First of all, there's plenty of users; it isn't like there's a shortage. Second, they don't care much about how many users they have - and they have enough anyway. Third, what do you mean, "It'll open Scratch to whole new audiences and stuff"? It isn't like you'll get plenty of people just by creating Scratch for a device; they can use a computer instead of waiting for Scratch for new devices... and it isn't like they can't buy one.

Re: Why Scratch won't be made for Xbox, Playstation, iPhone, iTouch, etc.

well why not for the ipod touch? i have some good resons. if you want it portabol but dont want to spend 400-6000$ on a laptop you could spend like 150 on a referbised 2g ipod touch. also it would be good for the paint editor becuase it would be like finger paints. and it would be very easy to program with the touch screen.
