Scratch Kart Demo (that big project that I abandoned)

http://scratch.mit.edu/static/projects/RHY3756547/908591_med.png
WOW that image looks compressed.

Project (severe advisory that you do NOT run online):
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/RHY3756547/908591

Project download:
http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/RHY3756547/908591/download

Full 32MB uncompressed demo:
http://cid-7ac23dbb435960c0.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Scratch%20Stuff/Scratch%20Kart%20Demo.sb

I present to you the game that I have been working on for many weeks. I gave up on this game because of the amount of lag in current scratch, but I thought I should clean it up and release a demo.

The demo includes two courses, both from the original mario kart games; Yoshi Falls (MKDS) and Baby Park (GCN). The final game is planned to have 6 original levels including these two.

Controls:

Arrow keys (numpad arrows advised): Drive
Space: Initiate Drifting (you can get mini-turbo this way)
P: Pause the game.
B: Use current item

The staff high scores are 1:15:15 for Baby park and 0:58:27 for Yoshi Falls. Try to beat them.  wink

The final game will not come out until Scratch 2.0 is released. By then hopefully things will run much faster.

For all you nosy people who like looking in the code you can connect a script which starts the menu and allows VS game mode - which is REALLY unfinished (cpu drives off cliffs, game lags, item boxes do nothing) and will be finished when Scratch 2.0 comes out.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Re: Scratch Kart Demo (that big project that I abandoned)

So at one point, you actually expected to have this run in scratch!?

I can't even scroll down to see the scripts without it freezing. You should have tried to make it more minimal.

I do have to somewhat agree with you. Honestly, the game would probably be a lot faster if there was more simple graphics, and there were fewer (if not none) sounds.

Your kidding me, uncompressed, took 4 min 30 sec, with a rate of 120kb per second.

Drat, when I try to download it it says "File Damaged: Message not understood: unused"  and it won't start online.  Oh well.

I tried the compressed version. It's nice, though the steering takes practice.I didn't bother with the 32MB one though;I canceled it as soon as it said"3 Days Remaining".

3 days for a 32 MB file? In 3 days I can download a full DVD...  neutral

The OS and the computer/laptop's brand don't affect the downloading speed...

But maybe I can download a DVD in less than 3 days... In 1 day maybe.

The steering is meant to be a lot better. It's fine for me because I have an Intel Core i7 - but with slower processors the frameskipping I implemented starts to screw with the controls. Hopefully Scratch 2.0 will remove that problem (less lag kthx)

Re: Scratch Kart Demo (that big project that I abandoned)

Yeah, even if scratch v2 is less laggy it probably won't run your project. Not to mention that you will have to wait at least year for v2 to come out.

It's not as if I'm going to sit around for a year and wait just for this. -_-

Re: Scratch Kart Demo (that big project that I abandoned)

Even so, seeing as its over a year away I can't see anyone waiting for v2 just to fix a project. I think you would stop using scratch before it came out so it shouldn't really be considered.

I'm guessing that rdococ has some kind of spelling checker (UK spelling settings) on his/her browser. There is at least one "misspelled" word in Brass45's post (according to rdococ's browser) - "Cancelled" is spelt the American way, for one. But I can't see any other spelling mistakes - a few missing spaces after punctuation, but no spelling mistakes. Rdococ, which words are underlined?

Re: Scratch Kart Demo (that big project that I abandoned)

Possible solution, use the chirp or byob compiler to turn it into a .exe and you might have found a way around it. (Iv not tested this) Then maybe you could turn that exe into flash using this http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/exe-to-flash.html and then you could host it on another website?

What do you mean, the compiler or the exe to flash idea?

Another thing, is it just me or is the turning really bad? But really good graphics.

One time my computer was copying a very small file to a different folder, and it said 903479 minutes remaining. AND THAT WAS TRUE! Dx

After using flash for a while I can guarantee you that there is no program that can turn .exe into .swf. If there was then most flash games would be made in gamemaker.
