Re: Scratch 2.0 Discussion Thread

My biggest fear is that Scratch 2.0 will not work with older Scratch projects, because it was programmed in Flash instead of Squeak.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Discussion Thread

Nah dont worry WHIZ .sb projects are binary databases which tells the ide which function is to be run and when *(like text in a .txt file) so the flash version can easily open these with some sort of file handling.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Discussion Thread

I'll have to quit Scratch then...If it's going to be Adobe Flash Player, my laptop won't be able to view projects unless I download. That'd be a hassle.

More Info(Based off of Tweets and hints on the Scratch 2.0 topic): The Scratch Team really seems to be getting in with remixing capabilities and making things easier to understand for younger users. I will post if they send me any emails.

I have a bad feeling they will make the mistake of removing blocks.  yikes

I was hoping for an advanced basic format. Very advanced blocks for users who know what they are doing and blocks that make things simpler for newbies.

Haha! Bluestribute found the page somewhere and sent it to me the day it was due, so I just made it. That is why I got the 1.4 beta a few weeks before it came out, and why every few months the Scratch Team sends me something about Scratch.

My friend JolteonTails gave me a link to the 1.4 beta.

They will probably program the Flash interpereter to work along with old projects.

Not sure where this came from but it's on the Scratch Wikia.

Also check out the Scratch and Share proposal that just won Scratch 200 grand:
http://www.dmlcompetition.net/year_3/winners.php

Personally, I'm hoping for more broad connection functionality besides just connection to hand-picked Web 2.0 sites like Twitter and Facebook. I posted my idea a while ago here but the thread turned into an argument over the definition of the word "hacking". Another nice feature would be simply to change the stage size, which would be much easier to implement if the player and editor were written in the same language.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Discussion Thread

Great informational post. You may want to add: I read somewhere that Scratch 2.0 is going to allow interaction with social networking sites.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Discussion Thread

I want Scratch to stay download and Java-based. You know, RuneScape is the most popular free online game ever; it is Java-based.

Yes, I like the idea of downloading, but the problem with Scratch running in a Java player, is that there are quite a few glitches because Scratch, which is Squeak, converted into Java, does just not work out completely. With an online based scratch, nothing will go wrong, because there will be no converting needed.
