No. When somone friends you, or comments on one of your projects/galleries, you get somthing that shows up when you log in saying that you have # of messages.

I always deleted mine because I want to see how many new ones I have... but the causing a slow server is new to me.  neutral  (Although I have noticed it being slow...)
