Everything has changed; but not neccesarily for the better.

I love the scratch website. The first time I saw it, I thought it was awesome. Then it was all new, with famous people and nice people that didn't really care about fame. Now, it's starting to turn into a scary and boring thing.

Everyone is quitting, or has been banned. Nikkiperson made funny animations, which I used to make a custom to watch on Saturdays instead of the stupid Disney Channel things they usually put on. Floatingmagictree was a person that I looked up to, at least in programming. So was archmage.

Now, all I really have in mind is watching out for my friends' (true friends, not web buddies) projects and making special, cute things for them. I miss the good times.

True, back in '07 everything was awesome with Scratch.  Everyone knew everyone, the front page was constantly giving different Scratchers a chance at fame, and best of all, no chain remixes.

Oh, the good ol' days  hmm

I don't actually do Scratch anymore. It gets old. But hey, what do I know, I'm an '09er...

08er here. I agree. Now, it's kind of like the website is all messed up. maybe we should delete all the users, and remake this site!  hmm

I agree its gotten different, but I don't think deleting everyone is a good idea.

That might be a tad extreme.  I think this is just a phase of Scratch, things will clear up eventually...

I hope...

I don't think so. The more people that join the more, let's say "non-07ers" we get. And proportionally we are getting a lot more "non-07ers" than "07ers".

What's wrong with not being an '07er?  I really don't see a difference between users, except that Scratch itself was different in '07...

By "07er" I meant more a type of person. In general the 07 crowd was oriented to making how quality programs and applications, as well as helpful and kind. The new kind of users we get are often spammy trolls etc.

Well, I bet after a while some of those "trolls" will start thinking "Maybe there is more to Scratch than drawing a pic and uploading and going "LOOK I DREW A PWETTY PIKTURE!!1!1"  and they will start thinking about using the blocks and seeing other projects and actually LEARNING something.  This is going out on a limb, of course, but I try to be an optimist!

Re: Everything has changed; but not neccesarily for the better.

That's too bad. I joined in late 2009, so I guess I missed the glory days of this place. I try to be nice, only upload good projects, and be helpful, but no ones perfect. Maybe this will be the year things turn around...

Re: Everything has changed; but not neccesarily for the better.

I came in 07', but my account doesn't say that XD

I do think Scratch is getting worse, but I'm not gonna be tired of it for a loooong time.

I miss 07, where I was a bystander in a growing community, watching as hanley4 was geting taught by newbiez and nikki was coming out with the first few Heroine Lisas...

...when there was no gabby to a maho...

...when there was no RHY vs. DC...

...where the WOTF were watching the latest Scratch animations...

...where Scratch was purest.

hey kiddoes i'm back

Please don't bring that 2012 thing, it's not true, and all the users will "harass" you.

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

Re: Everything has changed; but not neccesarily for the better.

I remember around the time I joined, scratch was completely different than it is now. Everyone tried to make the best projects they could. There weren't many users so almost every active person had a fair chance of getting famous.

Then, somewhere along the line something went wrong, and the community quickly devolved into a social networking site, only with more arguments. In order to get famous, you can just make a bunch of 1-sprite 0-script projects with a nice picture and everyone loves you. No one seems to care about programming, as long as the art is good, that's all that really counts in a project anymore.

As I sit here tapping the tiny keys on my DSi's touch screen, I can't help but wonder - where did we go wrong?

That turned out surprisingly deep.

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

I can only wonder where Scratch went wrong too.
Back in '07, when people commented on projects, they said nice and constructive words.
Now, I'm seeing a lot of "lame...." and "THIS IS STUUUUUUUUUUPIDDDDDDDDDDDDD."
