Speaking of Politics, I've never seen any type of thread like that on Scratch.

I love the new guidelines. Should keep everything more stable.
One question though - what if some people spark an offtopic discussion on a normal thread? Will it be closed immediately or will the users be warned to stop discussing it?

Okay about the Discussing the Guidelines in this thread: What if we don't know if the topic is flamebait and we wake up with a ban?
Well, it's possible that could happen, but probably only rarely. Its up to everyone to be careful to be respectful.
It's impossible to write down rules that would cover ever single situation or flamebait topic that someone could think of. So how to define flamebait? We know it when we see it, and most of you do too.

I am dissapointed that the REligion topics have been labelled "problem topics" given that they managed to be some of the longest threads on Scratch and *didn't* become flamewars.
In fact, they provided an opportunity for Christians, Muslims, Jews and atheists to find common ground - as actually happened in the "Probably..." thread.
Will you also be banning religious projects? Religious projects that specifically prosytelise? How about discussion of those religious projects in the forums suitable for discussion of projects?
Part of the reason these didn't flame up was because we were spending a lot of time watching them / notifying posters. It turned out to be too much time.
Projects that share beliefs about matters of faith or atheism are acceptable, as long as they are not disrespectful of people with different views. If you feel a project is inappropriate for the community, please flag it and provide your reasoning. We'll review the project and decide what to do.

Before we do anything too drastic, let's consider the other options.
• Moving Misc. to a new forum (like the TBGs)
• Making it unavailable unless you have a certain number of posts in the rest of the forums
• Making a new rule against discussing religion and politics
• Any combination of the above
We don't need to close it, even the offtopic forums can be a part of the community. And a lot of people would be disappointed to see it gone.![]()
You know what? I completely agree.
They have a rule anout Number 3 that you posted,
but I agree with everything else you said.

If you're going to make a topic against evolution as a workaround for discussing religion, that'll probably get closed - it's still trying to get the same point.
Anyway, let's get back to the discussion about Miscellaneous, shall we?![]()
I was also making a point - that what one person posts as completely non-religious can still offend people religiously, as you can tell by the replies to my completely non-religious Evolution Explained project.
The point about projects was semi-serious, though. Are we beholden to these "don't post it if somebody might find it offensive" rules when creating and sharing projects, when commenting on projects, or ONLY on the forums? Is there about to be a huge cull of projects on the subjects of science, religion and polotics?
The forums are stricter, it seems.

Not at all, since if I wanted to complain about religion I could make a project doing so.
It could sit right alongside the two religious projects I made.
And then, presumably, I could promote that project in the Show and Tell forum.
And my comments have never been complaining about religion, per se - they have been reactions to people posting that theirs is the only right religion, especially if they attack science to do so.
****
Hmm... you know, those guidelines say nothing about science. So I could go start a pro-evolution thread, or a pro-big-bang thread, on a purely scientific, not related to religion at all, basis. And any arguments against evolution or the big bang would have to be presented in an equally scientific way, or fall foul of the no religion rules...If you're going to make a topic against evolution as a workaround for discussing religion, that'll probably get closed - it's still trying to get the same point.
I'm not so sure. If his Religion thread is allowed, so shall be everything else science. So as politics.
Religion isn't exactly in the science catogory...
And religious topics aren't allowed anymore.

Also, define a 'flame war'. Because IMO, I've seen it in your thread.
A flame war is when the thread devolves into nothing more than name calling, with neither side trying to present an argument, only abuse. None of the religion threads did that.
I beg to differ. Those threads exploded into flames many times. The reason you don't see them in flames now is that the Forum Moderators and Scratch Team members tediously rooted through the topics and stamped the flames out. Again and again. That takes time and effort that takes away from time that could be spent addressing Scratch related issues.
I feel sorry for you guys... you have so much work to do.
Thanks for moderating for us.

I understand what you mean, but how much DO you spend addressing Scratch related issues? On the suggestion forums, few of the mods/scratch team members ever post, giving feedback, or even elaborating. Why is that. WHY IS THAT?

Well, no need to raise your voice - but you do have a point!
I sometimes cruise those forums and chime in (more so a few weeks ago)- but often I tend to lurk. A bunch of times I've been reading the thread, about to answer a question when I see that a helpful Scratchers has already done so - which is great! All the same, I do plan to dive into Suggestions more often. Also, I'm working on making a brief 'Scratch Design Principles for Scratchers' page that talks about stuff Scratch Team considers when thinking about what to add to the next version of Scratch. I think it will be helpful / interesting for Scratchers to see. It'll also talk about good ways to demo / think through suggestions for Scratch. This is especially important while we're thinking through Scratch 2.0 because we want a lot of feedback from the community (see the Scratch 2.0 thread).
So - all that's to say that we do plan to be more active in Suggestions, etc.

Maybe Mayhem should just look for a forum that actually have people that actually care about proving kids wrong about their God.
"The Proving Each other Wrong About our Beliefs Forum" perhaps.
Well, I won't need to now - the ban will stop people posting topics that try to scare people into being Christian by telling them they are going to hell, or that post blatant lies about science, so I will have no need to respond.

What I like about you and Paddle is that you give your voices sometimes.
Sometimes, though. Plenty of times we wish that the Scratch Team would give their opinions in stuff and post in more topics.
I love it whenever I see one of you post in an innocent topic.
Maybe you guys could try and show yourselves more?

Um, I think we should be getting back to the discussion about Miscellaneous.
Wait - I don't think we're getting anywhere in the discussion now.

Lol... Putting capitals could also mean a different type of emphasis other than italics though, but I think he was 'cyber shouting' in this case. << (Learned all of this stuff from a lame magazine trying to be cool)

No, the old Inspiration and More closed because this is the inspiration and more and they wanted to organize it. Or so I've heard.

We changed the structure of the forums because of a proposal by Cheddargirl that was supported by lots of community members. I&M was getting very crowded, and we wanted to make space for really important cool categories like collaborations / requests.

Yes, but the majority of those users are most likely going to be the users that stopped using scratch, and just go on the forums to talk and socialize, and don't really care about scratch that much. That's why it doesn't matter.

Yeah, I have seen some stuff lately that shouldn't be posted here. Stuff about religion. I think these posters (not mentioning ANYONE) should really cut it out. The joke's over, guys. And its NOT funny
ESPECIALLY YOU, spammers.

I think you're right. I really feel good when someone from the mods or the Scratch Team posts in either my projects or my post in Miscellaneous. I got this really funny comment from Paddle2see* is one of my projects. It feels great to have someone important, like the scratch Team, make a nice comment on your stuff!
