There is no advertising on the Scratch Forums - Scratch gets no benefit from having users for users sake. If you are not contributing to the Scratch community, but only worrying about your own post count, then why should the Scratch community care if you quit?
In fact, having such people quit is a desirable outcome - and the primary reason to get rid of post counts.
So, if you are only interested in your post count, and would therefore stop posting if you couldn't see it, then absolutely, the plan works.
