Mayhem thought of this originally. http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=326758#p326758
It should be hidden until a certain amount of posts such as 100. It would force people to contribute to scratch, and not make idiot posts.

Really, wouldn't that just lead to spam in other places?

Well if they don't know it exists, then they won't spam as much.
Yes. Because every single member of the scratch community is responsible and will not let out a secret.

But how will it work... Are they gonna be IP banned from that part of the forums until a certain post count?!
You will occasionally get people posting a link to a misc topic because they want to show you what somebody else said. Like how you posted a link to the topic I started.
And then a problem with shared connection. What if you're over the post limit but your brother isn't? Then you would check the accounts, right? But then maybe you need to post something on your test account...

It's not that complicated... You don't have to IP Ban people...
You can enable certain options so certain forums will only be visible until a certain post-count. If somebody posts a link and somebody that doesn't have enough posts clicks it, it will just give a 404 error.

No, it'll say that you're not allowed to view the page.

Ok, that makes a big difference...[/sarcasm]

That could really frustrate some innocent people who want to see what people are talking about.
Offline
No, if you set it so they can't view or post in it unless they have a high enough post count, they won't be able to see the forum..
Offline
yeah, but what if somebody posts a link to a thread there?
I really don't like this idea.

That would probably get removed by moderators if reported as if not to cause angst among the newer members.

But look at this topic's original post. There was a link to a misc thread. What if people couldn't see that?
And the certain amount of posts thing is a bad idea in general, it just leads to more spam. A few days or something would be better. I remember when there was the 50 post for signature rule, I was trying to find any excuse to post and even just repeatedly bump in order to get 50.

Take your time to read and re-read everybody's posts please.
I just said, it would give a 404 error, or it would say that you are not able to view it.

Yeah, but what if you NEED TO SEE that thread in order to understand what they're talking about?

Well you never 'have to' see anything. You could just ignore what they're talking about, or you could ask for them to give a breif summary of what the thread says or something.
Either way, I'm still suggesting the Miscellaneous thread gone/moved.
Offline
It wasn't you who suggested it, but it's a bad idea nonetheless.
Offline
What's so great about the suggestion? Miscellaneous will still exist, with everyone chatting in there...
Offline
You wouldn't use an IP ban.
You would block certain accounts from accessing it.
Since the forums use viewforum.php and viewtopic.php, it would be easy to simply not show miscellaneous forum posts to people under 100 posts.
We would certainly not tell people about this until they 'unlock' it. If we do tell, then they will add meaningless posts to try and boost their numbers to 100.
There is also the issue of grandfathering current members who are under 100, but have already used the miscellaneous.
Offline
Grandfathering? What exactly does that expression mean?

Being here during the days of the 50 forum post rule, I've noticed how easy it is for normal users and commercial spammers to easily gain the 50 posts needed for a signature by easily doing the following tactics:
- go to all the stickied 'forum guides' and type in "great tips", "that's good to know", and "thanks for the guide"
- go to several 'New Member' threads and post "hi, i am new member" or "hi, i am new".
- go to several 'Show and Tell' threads and post "sounds cool".
By this observance, a 100 post requirement rule may not be a good enough deterrent here to prevent new users who are looking to troll and spam the coveted 'Miscellaneous' forum (assuming they have gotten word of it).
Most forums who have locked sections from new members usually have posting requirement, time requirements, and reputation requirements before gaining access to the locked forum. Scratch currently does not have a reputation system, but perhaps any post requirement could be supplemented with a similar time-based one. A Scratcher with good intentions is more likely to wait and stay on the forums, a troll or spammer is less likely to wait and will probably spam right away and is more easily caught.

How about 15 days after they have reached 100 posts will be when they're allowed to see the forums?

I personally think the Off-topic forum should be just deleted. Many other websites better suit the topics that go under that category, so there is no reason to allow it to invade the scratch community.
