I think people do make the equivalent of typos when they speak. We make pronunciation and grammatical mistakes when we speak.
I am no against the idea, I think a good example of how this could be implemented is in the digg.com commenting system that allows you to edit a comment only within 30 seconds of posting it.

Only if you are watching one of your own projects, there's an X link on top of the comment. That will delete that comment. But maybe you're talking about other persons' projects...hmm...I understand...yeah, they should do it.
