Re: Scratch 2.0

Bringing Scratch to the web would be fantastic because it would then be possible to write blocks in, say, Javascript that anyone could use. Scratchers could then write libraries of truly reusable code, which in my mind would bring Scratch closer to being what is considered "real" programming than anything else.

Nice artical.Scratch online should be interesting. Will it be some big java application or something?

Our current plan is to make the editor and the player using Flash (like YouTube and ClubPenguin, among others). This is not final though.

It should be final.  tongue

It's great to hear the responses. A high priority for the Scratch 2.0 design will be to work offline, so that it can save to your local machine and you don't have to be connected.

thank-you, Natalie.

i was scared that Scratch would be all online, thus making me paranoid.

Re: Scratch 2.0

It's going to be a while - we have to make it before we can release it, and that takes a long time and a lot of work! So probably about a year - but it's too soon to tell for sure.

Oh, so they were talking about the online part of it? Or will 2.0 be completely online, i thought 2.0 was online & offline. Or are they doing 2.0 completely in flash and dumping squeak?

Re: Scratch 2.0

To make it on a different platform the have to recode the whole program. So 1 year sounds reasonable.

Will Scratch 2.0 Compile projects or run them in an interpreter like before?

Re: Scratch 2.0

Ah, lot's of good questions!
1. Will there still be a downloadable version?

Yes - we think its important, especially for Scratchers who only have intermittent access to the interwebs. So you'll be able to work on projects online or off.

2. How many people are there on the Scratch Team?
I'm glad you asked! I've been thinking it would be good to tell Scratchers more about the Scratch Team. Luckily, there's a page that kind of sums things up:

http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Scratch_Credits

Not everyone listed there works full time on Scratch. There are lots of other projects to be worked on. Oh and the grad students also have to work on getting their degrees, which, as you can imagine, takes some time and energy!

3. Re: Squeak / Flash
Yep, it's looking like Scratch 2.0 will be flash based. Believe it or not, the tool that we use to make Scratch isn't the hardest part. It's the design decisions! We spend hours agonizing over many of them, trying to choose the best solution to meet our design goals: making Scratch an easy to use for kids to develop creative projects, even if they don't have experience programming. So whether we make it in Squeak or Flash, it's the thought we put into Scratch that's most important.

A bit off topic, but RHY, it still says that Minigolf is your current game.

And phew, for some reason, only-online Scratch makes me sad...
