Scratch was intended to be an educational tool for young users, so it might not have the capabilities of more advanced tools. If you think it can be improved, why not post in the Suggestions Forum?

I think if you look around the website some more you will find many people that have built quite complex projects in Scratch. To my knowledge, Scratch allows far more user interaction than Powerpoint - although I will admit that I haven't really pushed the limits of Powerpoint
Plus, Scratch has a cool cat mascot. Powerpoint has nothing even close, unless you want to count the talking paperclip (who remembers that monstrosity?).

Lol paperclip....
I definitely disagree with you jlsadshead, but I do know what you mean - some people have actually made games on powerpoint. Sounds crazy, but just watch this video

Or mine, lol.
Some users just make powerpoint like projects, but they're just not as advanced as the others. The more you use scratch, the btter the projects you make become! And the further away from powerpoints you get.
he paprclip was awesome, he turned into a bicycle!

You can make them in Scratch, too. Here's one: Web Wizard 4.2
Powerpoint is for slideshows. Scratch is meant for actual programming.

Powerpoint is a fun tool that can be used to do light bits of work... I tried programming in it once, and it actually was quite fun.
Scratch is different, but can be used to make slideshows too. Powerpoint can't make any of the big, interesting projects on Scratch - but Scratch can.

Scratch is not useless. It's a normal programming language. Would you call 'professional' programming languages useless? No. And with programming languages (Scratch included), you can make practically anything. Animations and movies, games (wide range here), simulations, tools (like a calculator or word processor), etc. - it's not useless.
Some projects that might show you more about Scratch:
Son of String Art
Contrast
Portal 4.0
The list is endless. But to put it simply - Scratch is brilliant, and most definitely not useless.
