Re: how do I use sin. cos, and tan?

I just made a program that uses sin/cos to create a double-jointed spinning arm:

http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/SmartIrishKid/482956

And I actually created this completely from "scratch" while I was messing around with the trig functions, though it was partially inspired by this topic.

Also, does anybody have any ideas on how to create a double pendulum from this?

Re: how do I use sin. cos, and tan?

About this thread, there are two things I am curious about, and would be grateful if anyone could help :
1:How do you use trig with numbers?I get the facts about using it on a right triangle, but I want to know how scratch does it with variables and other numbers(reason for knowing:My current way of finding how a complicated math equation in scratch works is by doing the calculations in my head and then visualizing the results.(e.g.point in direction 1+C-2/34 if C=4 =point in direction 0.0882353etc.)This doesn't work with trig because I can't compute with a function I don't know)
2:Practical applications of trig.I already know calculating trajectories and rotations, but that's about it.One thing I want to learn is it's 3D applications, but I really don't care as far as applications go.
Sorry that you had to read through all that, but it would be really helpful if someone could answer my questions.

answer to the question: you don't unless you know what it does. what possible projects other than a calculater and boooooring graphing programs would ever use cos tan or sin? the answer is there arent any.

Seriously, you don't understand do you.

Sin and cos are used to make the move (   ) steps block. And with those blocks, you can scroll without having to move forward and then back (possibly causing hit detection glitches). Tan, I don't know about, but sin and cos are used for waaaaay more than just calculators.

Learn something about the topic before you post. What math course are you taking? A 6th grade level one?

oh yeah here come the nerds. listen kid, you're not the one who makes that block, so it's not your concern. the scratch team knows cos tan and sin, and that's great, but you don't need to. that math is practically worthless in the real world and for your information, i take advanced grade 15 calculus

Yeah, but the question was about scratch. They have a use in scratch, and you said that they were useless for interesting projects.

That's a pretty disrespectful tone you've taken on there.  Please be polite.

I disagree strongly with your statement about not needing to know trigonometric functions.  They are used in many areas in Engineering, Computer Programming, and the Sciences  - pretty real world stuff to a lot of us.

Triangles will be very useful in calculating other things. And also poking things with the pointy corners.
