Options:
Buying the song on itunes: Perfectly legal
Ripping from youtube: Legal, but you must give credit.
Ripping from youtube, and changing things around about the song: Creative commons, so legal.
Limewire, and other sources to download free music: Illegal.

Hey revolutioniser, I'm not a lawyer, but as for the stance on video game music, chances are you could probably use it in a Scratch project and claim the use of music under the doctrine of Fair Use as you are not using it commercially for profit.

I believe you are referring to this, right? The Music Websites index is a list of websites where you can legally download and the use music for free. The issue here is not the use of music in a Scratch project, but rather, the legality of the source itself. Using P2P software (such as Limewire or Kazaa) to obtain music is considered illegal because the music is considered to be released illegitimately (that is, without consent of the owner). The same follows for most other free music websites for the same reason.
In the end, though, if want to be 100% free from any chance of copyright infringement, you should be using materials released with a permissive license (such as Creative Commons, for example).

I'm sure its legal IF you give credit to the site/company/game you got it from.

I think you are mistaken about the concept behind giving credit. Acknowledging the source of copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. Basically: giving credit does NOT mean you automatically have the rights to use someone's work where a permissive license is not given.
As stated before, the concept of "Fair Use" can probably cover the use of the video game music in a Scratch project; it is unlikely that a game company will sue over a project that is meant to be instructive (by sharing code and ideas) and makes no profit. Giving credit is just the proper thing to do here because it acknowledges that the music does not belong to the Scratcher, but rather the game company.
