Persistent Java error message

The link to test my PC for Java says it's loaded.  In addition, I went ahead (after I kept getting the message that Java wasn't on my computer) and allowed it to be REinstalled.  But the message always recurs: Java needed to view projects.

I emailed the ScratchTeam a week ago about the problem but haven't gotten any reply.

Has anyone HAD this problem, and SOLVED it?

My computer runs Windows XP Pro and IE 7.

Could the problem be some wrong settings in IE 7 ?

I never get any error messages about Java other than from the Scratch site.

Thanks for any help!!

Re: Persistent Java error message

Larry,

Your browsers security settings (which can block Java Applets) or the Java version supported by your Java plugin might be two possible causes.  I haven't been able to reproduce the problem you are describing.  Which Java version does your plugin support?  And can you run other Java applets?

To determine your supported Java version:
- IE and other browsers allow you access to the Sun Java Console from the menu.  When launched it will list your version number on top.
- Another alternative is to verify your Java pluggin here, and it should specify which version is detected.

Applets to try running:

Re: Persistent Java error message

Hi Natalie,

Thanks for the links to test my Java installation.

When the installed version was tested I was congratulated for having Version 6, Update 1.

When I went to the applets an odd thing happened.  The "Blink" applet worked perfectly, but none of the others did.  In each of those cases I got the message that my Java had understood the <applet> tag but was not running the applet.

But Blink sure looked good.  :-)

Does this give us any kind of clue?

Thanks again!!

Re: Persistent Java error message

Larry,

Hmm...very strange.  Sounds like this is definitely an issue with either the Java Plug-in or some related conflict (maybe between it and your Internet/network setup or an OS update, etc).  If you have a different browser, try out applets from it.  Some pop-up blockers and similar browser protection software (or even your browsers security settings) inadvertantly blocks applets - which can be tested by disabling the blocker and then testing the applet links again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Digging deeper to check out your java install can be done as follows:

Your Java Plug-in has its own preferences - which you can get to from your Windows control panel (you may have a java and/or a java plug-in options).

In the Java Plug-in Control Panel
There - Under the "advanced" tab check what "Java Runtime Environment" is selected.
           - Under the "browser" tab  make sure your preferred browsers are checked,
           - and finally in the "about" tab you will find a verification of which version your OS recognizes.

IF NOTHING ELSE WORKS -
You can manually reinstall your Java Runtime Environment, by downloading and running the latest (or maybe a slightly older & potentially more stable) JRE from:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Or install another browser to circumvent browser specific issues:
