Scratch on portable devices...

There was a Scratch app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch available but Apple removed it  sad

I think it we would be cool to have Scratch on some common portable devices. Scratch is made in squeak, a very cross-platform programming environment.

You just need a VM, you have:
Squeak for Windows Mobile
Squeak for Iphone (iSqueak)
Squeak for Nintendo DS
______________________

Now we still need a portable scratch application. Scratch 1.4 works kind of, but it is designed for normal PC's and thus not ideal. It consumes way too much memory for use on resource-limited  devices.

What would a portable Scratch app look like?
Should it allow you to create Scratch projects, or just play them?

I already managed to play Scratch projects on a Windows Mobile Phone, it's really cool and I think this idea has a lot of potential.

Please post what you think!

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

How I would do it

I think you should just be able to play scratch games. That means, the application should have 4 icons: Open,Close and Green Flag, Stop All.

Some mobile devices like mobile phones have very low memory and cpu, so maybe there should be a Scratch compiler to Java? Really, I think this ideas can make Scratch a super portable thing! Try softboard for the mobile phone thing, but we can do better ;P

Edit: Softboard's gone  sad

What kind of Scratch pre-releases were you writing about?

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I think that would be great! Maybe a version of scratch for ipod and iphone, like the scratch now, but with more commands for accelerometer, and multi touch. Then there would just have to be a player that went on the ipod/iphone. Also, maybe the player could load any project from the internet using some version of the scratch site, and you could also save ones you like to your ipod/iphone, or save them to it with the computer and syncing.

Just an idea. I think it would be awesome to be able to play scratch games on an ipod.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I think the iPod Touch/iPhone, would be the best platform to work off of, since they are very popular. If a version of Scratch is released that let's you program stuff for the iPhone (I'm just gonna say iPhone for the iPhone & iPod Touch) it would be great.

Media Lab could release an app in the Apple App Store letting you browse iPhone compatible Scratch projects, and run them on your iPhone. You probably couldn't save the projects, so you could favourite them for future use.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Hmmm

I think we should keep the same Scratch on all devices, so I'd not implement those multi touch and accelerometer blocks...

It would be so cool to play the same Scratch project on a PC, PocketPC, Iphone, Ipod, ...

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

try the PSP its graphis might be able to support scratch. you could dowdload off scratch (because PSP  can surf the internet) you could make it so you can use the D-pad or the left stick.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

What about:

Mobile phone with 320 x 240 or 240 x 320, kann play JAVA-Applications

would be nice, to have 480 x 360 Scratch-Games on a 320 x 240 display,
maybe, if I use only the -160, -120 ... till ... 160, 120 rectangle of my Scratch app.
oder the upper left corner from -240, -180 .. 60, 60

my arrow keys are the navigation keys on the phone, and the numbers are
the numbers and some special keys can be letters or the space button

I have a Sony Ericssion w910i, maybe I can write an app in Scratch and it will fit
to the screen right ... for work in JAVA-Runtime-Environment.

thanks for reading, a Scratch-prog. will follow soon, for understanding me better :-)

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I think you could be able to make scratch projects on the iPod touch/ iPhone, but the dislplay would be completely different. I would have it so that you have different screens for the different features of scratch; blocks, script, stage and sprite editing.

You would have the screen, and then on the left and right edges you would have a button you could press to go to the next feature. For the blocks, when you click it it would go to the script section, and then you could press the edge of the screen and it would switch from the block section to the script section, allowing you to drag the block to it's desired place.

I think it could work  smile

I mean an "only" player for Scratch-files, no Scratch itself.

Using iPhone SDK, it might be possible. I am not so sure about DS, and Windows Mobile I would have to know more about.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

Hasn't this been suggested multiple times? I think the reason they can't make Scratch on an iPhone is because they don't support Java or something, which is primarily what Scratch runs on.

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

funkymonkey - not really, The scratch application in which you design your projects works on Squeak, the project player on the website is a Java applet. Since a DS, PSP, PocketPC/Windows Mobile, ... don't support Java, it might not be the right choice to make. Softboard did use a Java program on the Samsung phones because all Samsungs have Java built in.

That's why I suggested squeak, it's more difficult to set up on your mobile but easier to develop - we could just start off the current Scratch source code.

t lacks (among other things) sound support and a virtual keyboard.

The DS isn't lacking sound, "it" is the VM port  smile

Re: Scratch on portable devices...

I definitely like this idea, like a scratch DSiware app. It could really bring scratch to the spotlight. But before this is considered, some technical improvements need to be made to scratch, like creation of 3-D models, 3-D movement and rotation, camera sprites (display on the screen what it is touching,) vector graphics, and save files for games. Right now, I'd be happy with save files and vector software, but in the meantime, things like this should be done to make scratch more popular.
