About 18 months ago, I got permission from Professor Resnick to incorporate ideas from Scratch's block-building interface into a game creation environment that not only makes game creation easy but understands that collaboration and sharing are central to successful game creation.
We loved the Scratch interface and instantly caught on to why it's worked - no syntax, minimal typing, feels like a natural language and is conducive to sharing and remixing work. We felt strongly that this paradigm was a fit for our needs and going back to a quote from the Scratch Team, "rose the ceiling" by many floors to make it suitable for full game creation.
Where do people go after Scratch?
We've read a number of topics about where people go to after they outgrow Scratch. Some will jump straight to programming languages, and some will move on to environments like Game Maker.
The problem is that neither of these alternatives embrace the idea of collaboration - you can't share your resources or scripts easily with others or build upon the prior work of others via remixing. They also tend to feature clunky drag and drop interfaces that are completely inferior to what Scratch provides.
Scratch-like Game Creator?
What if you could create full games in a Scratch-like environment that embraces the same kind of block-building interface you're familiar with and at its core, embraces sharing and collaboration? That's what Stencyl is.
Stencyl provides both a toolset and an iTunes-like "marketplace" for sharing and downloading all kinds of works from single graphics and scripts to modules or full game engines, all which are remixable by the end user.
Today, we're at the point where we would like to invite some prolific Scratchers to have a look at what we're doing to see whether we've successfully extended the initial ideas presented by Scratch in a full game creation toolset.
Want to try it out?
The Scratch Team has asked me to solicit interest in accordance with their rules. Please view the following topic to do so.
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=27492
FAQ
Will it be free? Yes.
Will it be open source? No, but there will be an API to extend the software via plugins. It's a wholly separate project from Scratch and does not derive from the Scratch source, so we don't fall under the terms of the source code license.
Did you obtain permission to incorporate the Scratch concept? I confirmed this with Mitch early last year.

I'm interested, because generally game-making is my hobby, and I want to grow into other programming languages, to have experience not just in scratch, but other languages. I'm not completely ready for text-based languages, but it seems like this would be a good next step in my future.
I have many good projects, just look at my profile. One of my very proud accomplishments, is making a level-creator in scratch, stored with a list, and then having a character in scratch use the array, and the x and y positions, to move, and to sense walls. I've created a normal level creator, and a mario level creator, and one that I haven't uploaded yet, is a mario level creator with a level code creator and reader. I've also created some Super Smash Bros. related games, using size to zoom in and out to create an effect that makes it looks like theres a camera zooming in and out, and a remix of the series, where there are balls, bouncing off of each other. I've also incorporated with it some very smart CPUs, which try to hit your character, and are smart not to fall off.
My email is [removed by Forum Moderator] to start.

I am interested because I believe scratch is limiting my programming abilities with it's speed and lack of advanced features.
My best projects:

I'm interested in using this, because I'm pretty much done with Scratch (I know most things about it and I no longer make projects), and I'd like to move on to another programming language, but all languages I've tried (Phyton, Visual Basic and some more) are too complex for me (I'm really bad at memorizing text commands. But I managed to learn some ROBLOX Lua). And I find this idea interesting, too.
By best projects:
Scratch Tycoon v1.2 - In this game, you create your own Scratch website and manage it.
Ball Shooter v1.1 - Throw a ball to the blue area, avoiding obstacles such as walls and using other things at your advantage, like power-ups.
They're really old though, from 7 and 10 months ago respectively. Haven't made any good stuff lately.
E-mail (the mods will kill us for giving them out XD): [removed]

One of my earliest projects
This project is a nice one
This project has been FEATURED and is one of Scratch's sample projects. (look in 'animations' and 'snn#1' and you'll see it's created by Greatdane)
I'm interested because I am stuck on Scratch because I don't have the courage to move on even to Game-maker.
Really, I'm trying to learn Python but can't really get it stuck in my head.

One thing I forgot to ask is some form of contact (a junk e-mail is fine), so that I can reach you privately and get you some invite codes.
Jon914, this sounds like a fascinating project you are working on but please do not ask our members to put their email addresses on forum posts or anywhere else on the website. This is a basic safety precaution. Why don't you have interested people email to your address (with their parents permission, if they are minors) and establish contact that way?

Have you sent invites? Or have you just recorded them, for when it's released, or the developers preview comes out, you can e-mail us?
Because I haven't recieved any invite.

Will do - all interested people should e-mail scratch [at] stencyl [dot] com which is a temporary alias I've set up that will reach my main e-mail. I've added this to the first post.
The only provision is that with this method, I'd like some proof that you are who you are, otherwise we could have some people posing as the veterans.

My partner will be sending out invites later this week, so I've just taken down names and am checking out your works.
He's taking final exams right now, otherwise this would be a lot quicker.

Ok, great! I can't wait! Anything else you can tell us about the interface? Can you upload some pictures?

What platform does it run on? (Java, Flash, Misc Browser Plugin, EXE etc)

Both the toolset and the outputted games run in Java, though especially for the former, it's extremely hard to tell that it was written in Java since we've implemented our own custom look and feel that looks dashingly pretty.
Engine-side, while things run buttery smooth today (60 FPS), we are evaluating Flash and some alternatives for the future.

Unfortunately I cannot at this time, but once you receive your invite, you'll be able to use and see the application right away.

OK - that caught my attention, also the shiny look bit aswell.
I haven't seen 60 FPS in ages! Speed has always been the downfall with advanced games on scratch (or at least mine).
Can't wait to try it out.
