Scratch crashing regularly (generates bus errors)

Hi. I got my copy of Scratch at a conference a couple of weeks ago and everything worked nicely. Five or so days ago it started misbehaving. Now it crashes pretty reliably on certain scripts. (E.g., Animation/EweAndMe, Animation/DayDream).

I've tried total removal followed by re-installation. That did not help. The problem first occurred after I tried using the "Extras->start single stepping", but that might be a red herring.

I'm on a Mac PowerBook G4 running 10.5.2. The syslog crash report is as follows:

Re: Scratch crashing regularly (generates bus errors)

Hi, SSB.

I'm sorry you are having problems.

Since I have not encountered this problem before and since Scratch was working fine on your computer for a while, I suspect that there could be hardware or software problem with your Mac and Scratch is only a symptom of that problem. Have you installed any new software or upgrades recently? Have you installed new hardware (especially memory)? Have you been having problems with any other software recently?

You might try running the Apple Hardware Test:

  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86611

I notice that you are running 10.5.2 on a PowerBook G4. There *could* be some issues with that combination; see, for example:

Did the Scratch problems start after you had upgraded to 10.5.2?

Re: Scratch crashing regularly (generates bus errors)

I lose track of the order in which upgrades, etc. happened. However, I realized that my sound device had gone AWOL. As in, the system reported no sound device. I don't listen music much, etc., so I hadn't realized that I had no sound. I've had this happen once or twice before. So I jumped through the hoops to reset the appropriate hardware (Option+Command+P+R while rebooting) and voila, I had sound again. More importantly, Scratch was working again.

That was the only variable that I'm aware of changing between when it didn't work and when it went back to working.

Thanks for your suggestions.
