I'm working on a huge mystery story animation with voices, but it would contain weapons and maybe some mild blood/violence. Would that mean that it wouldn't have any chance of getting featured at all?

I'd like to recommend scmb1's gallery We Recommend. Instead of normal recommending galleries, this one is for everyone! It's a great idea, and it'd be nice for it to be featured so it can get plenty of people.

A long time ago, Chrischb asked about recommending galleries to be featured and Paddle2See said to post in here.

I suspect in this case it would be OK as long as the creator of the end project (Goch) had not been featured.

What about Design Studio? I've only been on the front page a couple times because of me submitting my projects to design studios gallery. 

I think YOSHI GOLF by News-guy should definately be viewed some more. It uses 3D graphics to show the dinosour guy hit the ball, and then it shows the ball and where its going on the map.
