There's been a lot of controversy about if '07ers are better than '08er, etc., and I want to express my opinion...
The Users of 2007: These users were programmers, who joined to program. Many different people got on the front page, and there were very few spammers and publicity mongerers. Very few people joined to get attention.
The Users of 2008: More "programming" users joined. Art and animation projects started in this era. The first remix chains were started. More and more people were joining to get attention, and spammed to do it. Remix chains also helped these people.
The Users of 2009: Many people were joining to get attention, and the "I quit!" chain* starts. Some people are still joining for the programming. Many spammers were joining. Art is at its high, and covers most of the front page.
*The I quit chain goes like this:
1. User makes a project that says that they are going to quit because nobody looks at their projects, someone was mean to them, etc.
2. Many people view it, and it gets on the front page.
3. Commenters try to get the person to stay.
4. The person finally says they will stay, after getting loads of publicity.
I'm sorry if this offends anyone. This is just my opinion.

I have some predictions...
The Users Of 2010: This is what is known as the flame era. Everywhere you look there are either closed or open flame wars. The Scratch Team had to hire 5 mods and move Inspiration and More with the New Text-Based Games. They had to hire 2 more mods for the TBG and I&M forums. The project section is just terrible. Spam projects are everywhere and I Quit projects are the only things on the front page, including art and other things. A third of the good scractchers quit. The mailbox suggestion was finally put in but it only resulted in more flame wars so they deleted it.
The Users of 2011: The Scratch Team couldn't take it anymore. They moved all of the forums with the Text-Based Games and hired 10 new mods. They hired 5 new people for the Scratch Team and were determined to end this crisis. The Scratcher Police played a huge part in this. All of this excitement caused more spammers, hackers, and bullies.
The Users of 2012: The Scratch Team removed the forums completely and made all of the mods members of the Scratch Team. The Scratch Police members were made Scratch Team members and they all fought off the evil. This brought Scratch back to what it was like it was in 2010, only without the forums.
The Users of 2013: While the mods kept fighting, the other users helped. They flagged many more projects and made more game projects. This was like 2009 now.
The Users of 2014: Back to good old 2007. Everyone was happy, used other forums to talk with each other about scratch, and made more game projects.

I like that last 2014 prediction part. Even though I am part of the 2009 era I do see this continuing to grow a problem.

Sure hope THAT doesn't happen. If it does, I'll upload a LOT of art projects. They will tell a story.

Why don't we HELP the '10ers and steer them the right way? Have you all gone CRAZY? We can always make a change in the Scratch Community because.... We ARE the Scratch Community!

Theres no such thing as the scratch police. People make galleries and teams saying they are, but they're just average kids that want popularity and are making a joke.

the "i quit" chain actually started in late 2008. I was around more in 2008 and people were doing it a lot then, but then i left in 2009 so maybe it just became more popular then or something.

You're saying that just because some immature kids who tag waffles on every possible project made a fake Scratch Police, because theres lots of flaming and hackers, they suddenly become in charge and stuff?

wow i really hope that isn't what 2010 will be like, and i doubt it will. I mean, Scratch has gotten worse than 2007, but not bad enough for it to be like that. If anything, the flame war thing would happen in atleast 2011 or 2012.

I think in 2008 Lanie made a thing called the Scratch Police, and anyone could join and they went around tagging inapropriate projects and stuff. Once one of them found one, they would post it in the Scratch Police gallery and they would all flock over to that project and tag it, resulting in it probably being deleted.

Everytime a user joins, the Scratch cat has another Kitten.
Everytime a user quits for publicity, a kitten dies.
Everytime a user moves on to something else, a kitten grows up.
I like to put '07ers and early '08ers as equals. They are the growing kittens.
The '09ers are 25% and 75%.
The '10ers are 50% and 50%
The '11ers are 75% and 25%
The '12ers are 85% and 15%
The '13ers are 92% and 8%
The '14ers are 99% and 1%
The '15ers are 100% and 0% - Scratch dies.
Lets try to prevent this. On January 1st, lets all find a '10er (look at the newest members part of the home page) and write their name down somewhere. Every time you log onto Scratch, check that account, and wait for a project. When you find one, post a constructive comment. Help them in any way you can! Teach them, give them tips, tell them what not to do. We want to keep the number of growing kittens up as high as we can. To many kittens die each day.

It started in Early 08, smart one.

Let's not push it in the users faces though. Constructive critisism is the key. Other than that, sounds like a plan.

Offline
Interesting opinion.
I'm not sure whether or not I get the vibe that you think 07's are better then 08's, or 08's or better than 09s. (I don't like the controversy. Seems a bit like segregration) but, I'm sure you haven't posted this to offend anyone, and heck, state your opinion. Its a free server, lol.
Um...what else? Aslittletonks lover said, Constructive critism! YES!
I don't think that saying 09 is the fad of the I quit is a great thing to say. Thats when the things happened. Don't tell the 09's that they are any worse than anyone else. Don't tell anyone they are worse than anyone. Ppl might just find that offencive.
Offline
heres an idea, why not stop all of the criticism of 09ers by making sure you dont adhere to the stereotype
and why not do what illusionist said and make sure to help new users!
then everyone is happy@
Offline
Yup. You can say whatever you want about the year 09.
Not about the people of 09.
Offline
Well, each year a handful of really good users join, so I hope '10ers will have some as well. I think because of the fame people are getting from art projects the '10ers will try to do only art to get popular quickly.
Offline
I'm early '08. It's nice to know that I'm finally into the elusive "not-a-noob" category.
The Scratch Police prediction... no. That post seemed very biased, aimed to tell everybody that joining the Scratch Police will make you powerful in the future. The only thing that could make that post more blatant would be a link saying "Join now before it's too late!"
I notice a marked DECREASE in light-hearted discussion (about video games, etc.) and an INCREASE in worrying about the future about the website. This means that something sinister is afoot. Parr0t and J0ker are being mentioned again, quitters are becoming of more and more concern, and threads like these prosper. We should probably isolate why this is happening before griping about how Scratch will be demolished by morons.

Awesome idea!!!!! I'll make a project about that (you'll get 100% credit of course) if you haven't already to get people to do this.

No, it was someone called dsdude or something like that. I remember seeing that fatal project.
MY prediction(and past):
2007: Sometime in early 2007, Scratch started. It slowly escalated. No one was there for the popularity. It was just to have fun.
2008: Start of the publicity of Scratch. Of course, with publicity comes fame, and with fame comes "I QUIT!" projects. I'm not really blaming anyone, but some people went too far...
2009: Actually quite peaceful. A nice rest from the ruckus in 2008. Some good users that knew how to do stuff joined, and the ones that escaped from 2008 came back again.
2010: Still peaceful in the early months. People making nice projects, with the occasional publicity streak. Later in the year, memes appear and Scratch grows like a social networking website.
2011: Similar to 2008, except with more "I QUIT!" and stuff like that. Scratch goes on a traffic spike.
2012: The Scratch Team requests a couple terabyte servers due to the increasing load of posts and projects about December 2012.
2013(If we exist
): Finally the ruckus from 2011-2012 is over and most of the popularitizers quit due to new rules about spamming, etc.
2014: Finally, something looking like 2007. The persisting Scratchers become part of the Team due to their knowledge.
2015: Scratch enters a new era of peace and prosperity.
2016: Golden age. Lots of games and animations.
2017: Memes have their comeback and it starts looking like late 2011.
2018: More and more spam.
2019: New technologies allow for more ruckus.
2020: The ruckus is unbearable. Spam from everywhere comes in. Havoc is everywhere.
2021: By this time, Scratch is bought by a company like Google or Microsoft.
2022: Scratch is canceled because of the unbearable havoc. A generation of stupid users growing up in a world without knowledge spam the site.
From my point of view, everything is going downhill.

for once, i actually agree fmt.
i mean, what do you think the '10ers will think when they see all this topics, like "10er's spam alot" and "10er's are gonna ruin scratch" and "10ers are gonna take drugs and smoke and kill all the jews in the world." What do you think they'd think. "Oh, this sounds like a nice place, even though they're talking about killing all the jews in the world" or "THIS COMMUNITY LOOKS MEAN AND UNFAIR TO JEWISH PEOPLE. I'M LEAVING *hmph*"
thats why i think mods should delete all these topics, before 10er's actually DO come.
