I don’t get angry very often but right now I have to admit that I’m pretty upset.
You might want to know the reasons, so I will give them to you.
Members are often discussing about how the Scratch community has become a worse place than before, and people are saying that it’s the newer users fault.
I don’t get it, you want a better community and you blame the new users, who you say upload “Pointless” projects.
Scratch is much about creativity and learning, so for me there’s nothing as a pointless project, everyone works on their own skill level and make projects based on their interest (art, games etc).
In 2009 a lot of younger users have joined, and you are blaming them for ruining the community, I just don’t get it, it’s hard to make advanced project when you just started programming.
In a year or so the 09’ers will have programmed for a longer time and they will have gotten better at programming.
This is what someone wrote about the different ‘species’ as some would like to call it:
'07ers - Quiet, advanced users, full of wisdom.
'08ers - Slightly louder, happy users. make some mistakes, mostly advanced
'09ers - Some spammers and publicity mongers. Few advanced, quality programmers.
'10ers - (lets hope for the best, but fear the worst)
The author of the above statements didn't have an intention to hurt feelings.
But feelings could easily be hurt if someone says that the 09’ers are worse than the ‘older’ users, directly or indirectly.
I think we should just stop talking about different ‘species’ and have fun, and program on our own skill level.
Do you agree?

Jacool, you've made history. I admire the way you want peace, and that is very good - I approve. (Wow, that was dramatic.
)
Anyway, I am willing to confess that at least some projects irritate me, and the art problem makes me rather upset - and the same goes with the Top Remixed.
But it's not just the new users who are responsible; I'd say it's when we mix up together and feed some things.

You have now changed me! Here's a Scratch Award.

Exactly, jacool.
Why does everyone blame the newbies? Probably because they don't want to blame themselves... and because everyone thinks they're superior to the newer people.
jacool, you only get upset sparingly? I get upset all the time... XD

That's just human nature
Anyway, I mainly agree with you Jacool, though I don't think the whole things totally wrong, I'm not saying this is all the new people's fault
'07ers - Quiet, advanced users, full of wisdom.

This is more of a summing up of a time line of scratch, these things are happening, but it's not specifically each species that are making it happen in a certain time period
There's less advanced programmers because, most of the advanced programmers from the early periods have moved onto something more advanced (like flash)
There's probably more spammers and publicity mongers because each person is getting less views on their project, because there's more projects being posted
So, to sum it up, no it's not each species fault.

Everyone seems to start new forums based on one's joining date, it's not segregation but it's gotten more and more like it.
Why care about when someone joined, isn't it your actions that counts?
Like Momma Gump said:
"Stupid is as stupid does"
Like I said it's your actions that counts.

I completly agree.
I think its mean to discriminate new people instantly just because they are new.
That might have good projects later on I mean it takes a while to get used to scratch if you have not programmed before!

After seeing almost endless complaints against art/animation projects and comments suggestive of join-date segregation in the Scratch community, I find this thread. All I can say is this: jacool, your open-minded comment has just absolutely made my day.
*applauds*

I agree with you.
I'm a new user, and I DO feel hurt from all this.

And now we move on to the late nomvember 09er's, who will be spammy like the rest...
/sarcasm
I totally agree. I thought the one topic was fun, but if you describe a group as a whole as "spammy" or "Publicity mongers" it is just not right to those who are not, or even those who are. Rather than point fingers, why not make an influence by visiting projects from the newer peoples that you like and ask for more projects like those?
I am also dislikeing the art hateists. (Funny, I used to be one...) The front page goes to what the community as a whole wants, not what you want and I like that. If most of the scratchers like art, I say that is perfectly okay. Besides, its not as if the games or sims don't pop up occasionally. Look at pinochios Number trick thing.
Either way, I think that scratch should stop complaining about things, and work on programming. Including me, so now I shall go back and finish Doodle Jump.

Yay. Thanks jacool. You saved me a lot of typing. Was going to do this myself.

Very nicely said!
Yes, I do agree that NEVER should anyone be judged by when they join. OF COURSE WHEN YOU JOIN YOU AREN'T GREAT! Anyway, If you think there are pointless projects, simple solutions, Don't click them. People won't get better if they don't try.
So, instead of spamming and telling them off, Critique them. Tell them what you dislike about it and how they can improve.
For instance, if I told you that one of your projects stinks and you were spamming scratch, your reactions would proabaly be one of the following:
1. Out of annoyance, create more of these so called 'spamming' projects.
2. Quit
3. Ignore the comment/delete it
4. Carry on.
If someone told you that "this was a cool idea but I think..." You'd have a much better outlook on scratch, possibly take the advice and continue.

To Jacool:
I agree with you 100%! Those lines about the different users look familiar...
My topic was never intended to insult anyone. As I had clearly stated below the topic.
It was a survey, to ask people what they think next year would be like. I asked them how they could help Scratch improve. But everyone took it the wrong way.
You certainly did too.
I will re-post my topic (I deleted it) and be a bit more clear about the message I am trying to convey.
Read before you post. I would also feel a bit more comfortable with myself if you could remove the words from the bottom?

like i said in the other forum, its stereotyping and putting people into groups. here's the thing, there are quite alot of people who DO do that and they came from the 09 generation, but thats not to say that they're all consistent, look at RH... i dunno random numbers
hes much better then me, and i've been here like two years. im not afraid to admit it that guys projects are sick!
there are many other skillful programmers that come from 09 too
so though i do think that you could generalize it that way, stereotyping isnt nice
especially when once you do that someone comes along and says, well thats not true and bam you've just gotten owned.
nice topic
oh and @ fg123, i didnt post useless projects, i waited until my games were good enough that they could meet scratch standards, and if they werent then i would take them off lol.

Yes, this whole stereotype is incorrect. There are a few "spamming publicity mongers" who registered in 2009, but to say that everyone who joined in 2009 is a "spamming publicity monger" is extremely incorrect. Scratch users should not stereotype against other Scratch users like this.

hey 09ers do you guys want to prove that you are caring users. this is an idea i came up with to SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF PEOPLE QUITTING. its also something nice to do for other people and makes youf eel nice too.
so it solves the i quit problem
and it will make people respect the 09ers because of how nice they are
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=26498 here it is

I can not quote this for truth enough. Great job!

Oh great Jacoolius, you have shown us the way.
I agree; the other day I was thumbing through some of my older projects and comments- most of which were extremely noobish
The "class of '09" just needs some time. eventually they will become the new '07ers- the quiet, advanced scratchers. (I'm not saying there aren't 09ers or 08ers who are just as advanced as us 07ers, because there are.)
Offline
It's not really anyones fault (I still believe it's scratch becoming more popular XD)
