Don't know how to rip sprites?

I have a good tutorial for ripping sprites on a Windows XP computer. Here it is...

1) Find the sprites you want to rip. Anything from Mario to Samus, it's up to you!
Some good sites are TSR or MK Warehouse.(MKW for MK sprites)

2) Right click and select "Save As". Save somewhere where you can find the file easly.

3) Open Paint. This is found under Start --> All Programs --> Accessories. It should be the 8th one from the top.

4) Click File --> Open in Paint

5) Find your sprite sheet and then click Open

6) Click the dashed box on the left side of the window. It's the upper-right option

7) select the sprites you want to get out of the image

8) Just like #2, right click and select "Copy to..." and then save as a 256-bitmap file(otherwise you cant open the image in Scratch) in your location of choice.

9) Open Scratch if you haven't done so.

10) Select the option to "get sprite from file". Find your ripped sprite and open It

11) Change the image however you want(mostly to make the backround of the sprite invisible)

12) Goto costumes and then copy the sprite

13) Change the newly copied sprite to another ripped sprite. This is done by -
In the costumes menu: click copy and them edit on newly copied sprite
In the Paint Editor: click "Clear" then "Import". Find your sprite then click "open"

14) Repeat 11 through 13 as desired

Well now you know how to rip Sprites.

Re: Don't know how to rip sprites?

The one problem with your method is that the rotation center gets changed every time and that takes more work.

I made a short project a while back explaining spriting that just involves Paint.

That is almost the same thing, but I wasn't worried about the center of rotation at the time. It was more of how to rip them, then get them into scratch.

Re: Don't know how to rip sprites?

That's hours and hours...holy cow.
There should be an easier way, like a program where
you outline the sprite/picture thing and cut.
If there is, please reply. Thanks for advise.
I post this to the FAQ, so... : )

Re: Don't know how to rip sprites?

I don't really follow this. Weird.  tongue

What I do:
•I get the sheet.
•I open up Scratch and make a sprite with the sheet.
•I copy the costume of the sprite sheet, and then edit the copied costume, getting rid of the stuff until I have the costume I want. I position it in the right spot, then save and exit. I repeat until done.

I remember the first time I ripped a sprite sheet... I didn't have any experience, but I tried... and did it on my first try.  tongue

Some people don't seem to be so exact with positioning... the costumes aren't in the same spot. It looks ugly when you use the sprite...
I always position the costumes correctly.  big_smile

Yes, that works, until you have a sprite sheet bigger than 480*360

I made a sprite ripping section in my tutorial thing XD http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/deatheater/670487 (it's under spriting)

Re: Don't know how to rip sprites?

Heres an easy way. Open the sprite sheet in the web browser. (Think this only works on Windows 7) open Snipping Tool (it's an app that comes with 7) Highlight the part you want. Hit File>Save as. Done.
