Project Recognition

This is another idea I came up with myself and it might be stupid, so brace yourselves.  I think there could be a system of recognition besides the front page.  If a project gets so many views, downloads, etc., they get bronze, silver, gold, or platinum recognition for that category.  The numbers I have in mind are as follows:

                             Bronze                   Silver                 Gold           Platinum

Views                         50                       200                    1000             1500

Downloads                 15                          40                     100              150

Loveits                      5                           20                    50                 75

Remixes                      5                           20                    50                75

We can work with the numbers.  Thank you for listening to my possibly stupid idea!  Bye!

Re: Project Recognition

Would all the conditions have to be met, or just one? I think gold is a little too managable if that is the case. Otherwise, it is a pretty good idea!

Re: Project Recognition

I'm not going to say that I completely support this idea, but I will say that the numbers should be a little different. Mainly, I think a gold star should be a really managable but recognizable achievement.
                               Bronze                    Silver               Gold

Views                         50                         200                 1000

Downloads                 15                          40                   100

Love-its                      5                           20                    50

Remixes                      5                           20                     50

I'm just wondering, would it average all of the medals into one medal, or would there be a medal for each one?

I'm happy with that, because one of my projects gets gold on everything!

But seriously.

This has been suggested before (or any other method of statistics in relation to project fame), and the Scratch Team slightly frowned on it. I don't think it will be happening... but overall, if it gets approved, add a Platinum for even higher positions.  wink

It's be nice, but I don't think Scratch projects should have ratings... it'll discourage plenty of people.

It might just be me, but having ratings would make Scratch feel like some gaming website.  hmm

Re: Project Recognition

I like the idea but as the community grows it will be much easier to get 150 views and it is just about impossible for non-godlike members to hit 1000 posts. Maybe the 'goals' could vary based on the relative numbers of views all projects are getting?

I don't intend it to be like a rating system.  Just a method of recognition for projects not on the front page.  Gives new users a goal.

The problem is that, most people might not even get bronze, because they're projects aren't getting viewed as much as other peoples (due to popularity and such)

True, but in that case they might be discouraged anyway because they don't get views.

I really do think this "discouraging new members" spaz attack has really gone too far (like political correctness  tongue ).  If they were really worried about it, they shouldn't have even added the comment feature.

I hate to start this conversation up again, but if someone is discouraged by this, it's their own fault because they don't have to let it discourage them.  For example, as far as I know, none of my projects (if any, only one or two) could even make bronze on anything, but that doesn't really bother me.  I know I'm an unpopular user anyway; that's part of the reason I don't do as much anymore.  It's not necessarily that I'm discouraged, though.  I just don't see much point in putting out more useless projects.  However, that would've eventually happened anyway, of course.  I'm thinking about starting back up again, though.

P.S.  I do know, however that very few user suggestions actually make the cut and that this is highly unlikely to get approved.

It feels kind of weird to be discussing this again after two years of silence, doesn't it?  tongue

There are a lot of positions for this problem, actually. ^^

One can argue that it would discourage new members, another can say that it would encourage the more experienced folk that feel themselves competitive, and both of them would be right.

One fact is that no matter how welcoming you try to be, competition is always there, it's just part of the community. The danger of this is that it cannot be controlled very easily. By making it official, you might not make yourself seem like a cute little cupcake, but it would give you a lot more control over the community. :3

It's really all about balancing between your sense of cuteness and thirst for power, you know. ^-^ In a sense, it's like an epic intergalactic laser battle between good and evil, if you catch my drift!

I don't like it, because it is impossible to come up with good numbers, but something like this might be better:

Loveits                       20%+                       35%+                   50%+              75%+

The remixes part would pull down the rank of a good project that doesn't need remixing, and each category would require all of the items in that list.

Re: Project Recognition

I had an idea like this awhile ago.

Beside each project name everywhere, it would have a small circle stating it's rank.

We can use anyone of the systems up there.  tongue

And basically, when you mouse over it, it will show the stats needed to pass that rank and the current stats of the project in a small hovering box.

I can make a quick mockup later.  smile

Hai.

Normally, I look back on my old forum posts and think they're stupid, but I actually kind of like this one.  I think I like your system for this.  The hard part would be working out the numbers.
