Don't expect it to always work. It's a beta thing, after all. You might have not been connected to the internet. Are you sure he put in the right IP?

There are two kinds of networks, home and internet networks. BYOB only allows home networks(connected in computers in the same house). If you used different computers on different networks, you're dead. 

But why does this happen? It's because of all these proxies and firewalls and stuff you don't want to deal with.

We were both connected, he did put in the right IP,

What do you mean? I don't exactly understand what you're saying...

Home Network is where your computer, and say, your dad's computer connect, World Wide Network is when you could connect to me or someone else on Scratch.

Nothing is wrong with mesh. I doubt anything network thing can connect to another computer with another network. Tried Remote Desktop?

There is probably nothing wrong with Mesh.

The connection might have been blocked by Firewall software etc. And you probably have firewall software - all XP and Vista pc's have "Windows Firewall" installed. Try turning it off (ignore all warning balloons and icons popping up    ) and see if it works.

You need a home network (!) Mesh only works inside home networks. You need the ip your router assigned to your pc internally and not the one the rest of the world sees (the one displayed on the bottom of the Scratch homepage).

If you want to check if the two pc's recognize each other, open the Command Prompt (Run>>cmd) and type

ping 192.168.1.1

but replace 192.168.1.1 with the ip you are connecting to. Press enter. If that returns an error (could not connect) then you are using the wrong ip. You can find out your pc's ip by watching your network's properties. Or, easier to explain, open the command prompt again and type "ipconfig" and press enter. IP address is the right one

Do you use windows xp professional?
You also need to be on the same network.

Right,
A network basically mean a wireless/wired network. You and your friend has to be connected to the same wireless/wired network.

A Network is how you are connected to another computer, or website.    Does that help?

It's cause BYOB only connects to the Home Network, your Home Network is separate from your friends Home Network.
