Scratch For iPhone

Now, you all know this subject has been raised before, but no one really knows whether it is possible or not. Well, I am here to shed some light on this subject. As you may or may not know, I am an iPhone Developer; meaning that I make and sell iPhone applications on the App Store for money or for free. People always doubt whether or not Scratch is even possible on the iPhone. The iPhone does not have Java, which is needed for online play, but there are ways to compile/run it on the iPhone. Thinking about the subject of playing games online or even making the games, ok, let's say that a game requires the use of the space key, how are you supposed to use the space key if your screen real estate is taken up by the online player and also that you have to use a virtual keyboard. That is one point. Another point is that developing a game in Scratch would have the same problem on the iPhone, if you were developing a game that uses the space key, you wouldn't be able to test it out. Now about the Scratch program itself running on the iPhone. The iPhone has literally no limit on what it can do. It can do anything. Graphics on the iPhone for 3D games could be outstanding, but no one wants to do that. The program of Scratch on the iPhone would be virtually a walk in a park. The iPhone is completely capable of handling the task. Another point that has come to my attention is that you would have much screen space to drag and connect blocks, as you would have to zoom in and out constantly. For Scratch to work on the iPhone, as I see fit, would that on the Scratch site, there would have to be a iPhone only section to play games. Also the controls for iPhone on Scratch would have to be completely different. As for the programming of it. As I know of, no one on the Scratch Team knows C, C+, C++ or Objective-C, I know Objective-C. Those languages are what is used (mainly Objective-C) for the development/making of iPhone applications. The team would have to learn Objective-C to make it. Also you have to develop the iPhone applications on a Mac computer ONLY. Now, just because I know Objective-C does not mean I can make Scratch for the iPhone; I am not educated enough in that language to do so. Another point is that Scratch is a free application, to put applications on the App Store to buy or download for free, costs $100 per year. As that will cut into expenses. My opinion is that for Scratch to be on the App Store it would have to be completely redesigned from the control scheme to the actual dragging of blocks and snapping them together. There are many more points to be made, but these are some key ones. I hope that these points help enlighten you on the subject and before you make any comments arguing with me, ask yourself this question, are the iPhone developer or am I? Thanks and post your comments about how you feel, just don't argue with me.

I agree with you. A lot of things would need to change. Then people might just criticize it for the changes.

Do you have any apps on the App Store?

Yes. I don't think I should sell a financial suite for free.

Re: Scratch For iPhone

Next time, suggest this in the Suggestions forum and call it "Why Scratch for iPhone is good".

Have you tried thinking about all of the features on Scratch and what it'd be like for iPhone?
