For some reason (after a horrible crash) my scratch installation became unlinked from the image file - and squeak comes up with a popup telling me to select the image:
When I select Scratch.image I get this error message:
None of the buttons result in scratch successfully booting (or doing anything in that matter). I've tried reinstalling scratch but I have the same problem. Does anyone know a fix?

The only way Squeak would ask you for an image file is if you have Squeak! So you have Squeak? This is VERY wierd! This could also happen if you have BYOB. Also, did you uninstall before you reinstalled? That could be it!

Tried that - didn't work.
I'll try opening my BYOB.
EDIT: Weird - BYOB works.

Does anyone know how to wipe squeak completely from my computer?

If you're dedicated to scratch, you'd maybe buy a new computer but.... XD

Must be a corrupted .image file.
To manully delete Scratch and Squeak, Goto C:\Program Files\ and right-click on Scratch and press delete and hit yes. Do the same thing with the Squeak folder. Then delete those two folders from the Recycle Bin. You can delete the Scratch Projects folder in the Documents folder if you want.
For this next part, it's highly recommended to make a restore point first.
Then you want to open the start menu, in the search box type regedit and then press enter ant then press continue. Then expand the folder on the top and look for .sb. Then right-click the folder and press delete. Press yes.
What happened:
1. Deleted Scratch and Squeak
2.1. System restore
2.2. Deleted the .sb file assosiation
There is one more part but I forgot what to do for that one.

1: The image file is not corrupt as it does this after reinstalls. I'll try RegEdit and the Applicatipn data folder.

Could be that you've got two files with the *.image extension in your Scratch folder. This can happen, if you accidentally create a copy of your scratch.image file, e.g. when you're editing someting in your Scratch folder. In your case, however, it appears that it's just your Windows shell file association that got broken somehow. So, just reinstalling Scratch should actually do the job (no need to uninstall first). Another thing you could try is editing the properties of your desktop shortcut: Make sure the image file is included. The setting should look similar to this:
"C:\Program Files\Scratch\Scratch.exe" "C:\Program Files\Scratch\Scratch.image"

Hmm - I tried both of these but neither made any difference...

I've discovered I can access scratch when the installation asks if I would like to start it but then never again...

Delete Scratch and Scratch 1.4. Keep the media folders. Download Scratch again. In that new Scratch folder, delete the media. From the old Scratch folder, drag the media into the new one.

Media? My projects and images are in my documents - so the media folder is irrelevant. Do you mean I should delete BYOB and Scratch?
