...I don't understand this very well
I'm not really that great of a scratch animator, i can't do anything great like make the cool looking images such as fractals, or make games comparable to flash games, but even when i put effort into a project it's not noticed, or is noticed minimally compared to the front page projects that are mostly "add your cartoon person onto my background" or a loop of someone swinging side to side singing "i like pancakes"... is there a certain theme of project that the majority of people like or is this merely because that my friends don't use scratch?

Some scratchers complain about the projects on the front page not being very representative of the scratch community. Really, the point is not to be famous. Usually if something is up there, it is because they are either famous or lucky. Some projects on the front page are accually chosen, like featured projects and the "projects selected by...". And the scratch design studio has projects submitted by users like you, but the projects are usually themed.

Scratch isn't about fame it's more for fun and exploring.
However, everyone has there own taste. I for example prefer puzzles/stratergy to most platformers.
If you want more views, try the Show and tell or leaving freindly comments on other users projects but don't try posting 'Click mah projects' as this normally get ignored.

Whatever you do, DO NOT try to 'fit in' with the 'famous crowd' and add pointless projects like that 
I'm actually very supportive of Deatheater's idea of being able to take your projects OFF the front page, because I don't want to be grouped with people who do stunts to get views >.> I would rather have a few loyal fans than be famous (on scratch)
