Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I've been thinking, can someone's username influence their fame on the Scratch Website? Lets think about people everyone knows:
Paddle2See
archmage
pinocchio
(I think)
nikkiperson2
MyRedNeptune
The-Whiz
(to name but a few)

Is there anything connecting these names. In some cases, it may be capital letters that make the name stand out more.

What do you think?

Okay, as well as putting in your ideas about this, you can also ask the person below you to rate your username. So, is my username catchy and easy to remember?

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I don't think so. I think getting popular is all about being nice/having good projects, or both.

Uh.....
The-Whiz

And Blade-Edge says "My name!!"

But think about it
Would you look at barfguy632532432's project? Or would you rather look at The-Whiz's project cuz he's The Whiz at Scratching

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I think it may be true, but not because of capital letters.

I think it depends on how easy the name is to remember.

For example:

                   %&^H*#_%hn8s&*$%_tuhdvno

                                        probably wont get remembered...

But something simple like Boberto should be easy for people to remember.  smile

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

Well, in my opinion someone's username can influence their fame on Scratch. For instance in would be much easier to become popular with a username like, 'BigBlueBunny' rather than 'digu578' because 'BigBlueBunny' is easier to pronounce, easier to remember and more catchy than a username like 'digu578'. So yes, I believe the choice of username is important and could help you become more popular on this Website  smile

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

It shouldn't have to be about that. You should get to be well known because of skill, not because of Gimmicks.

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I don't think your username will influence your fame that much. I think it's just that people who are more serious about Scratch take the time to pick better usernames as opposed to people who don't really care as much, who are more likely to just pick a username like bla34324. (not that all people that have usernames like that don't care about Scratch)

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

The name and how people perceive that name affect obviously affect it. It's one of the oldest marketing tricks there is.

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

Hmm... interesting topic. Oh, what's in a name?  lol
----------
andresmh brings up an interesting point: the concept of popularity. I think the concept of popularity differs between many people. Some view popularity as simply being well-known. Others as being well liked.

Now before I go off with my own opinion, let me make the assumption that popularity on the Scratch website includes these two factors:
(1) how well a user is known, recognized, and respected by other Scratch peers
(2) having many users visit his/her projects with much positive feedback (faves, love-its, positive comments)

I believe that a user name can certainly attract attention: an appealing user name may cause other Scratchers to visit that user's page and projects. However, this is no guarantee that the user will become popular - if other Scratchers do not like the user's projects, they are less likely to come back to see what the user has created, putting the user in obscurity.

Think about the user names listed above - then think about why they are considered to be popular. In my opinion, the above list of the users are popular because:
- they have been active in the Scratch forums
- their projects are enjoyed by many Scratchers
I don't believe their user names contributed little (if at all) to their popularity. In fact, when I first go on Scratch website, I noticed some users over others because of their positive activity on the Scratch forums, not because of their name.

Therefore, I think that popularity affects how easily a user name is recognized, but user name doesn't affect popularity standing.

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

As long as your username isn't too wierd, ei fartpoot67, it doesn't really affect anything. Really people remeber your name for the things you've done, whether good or bad.\

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I don't think that it really effects, but it's easier to remember one that's short and to the point(ish).
I kept on entering the best names I could think of until I came up with this one.
I remember when  I used to play Club Penguin there were some usernames like:
penguin475014457194540514857
How would you remember that? Mine was something like Edddy.

Whiz brings up a good point about RHY37.

Oh, and it's pinochio not pinocchio.

Re: Does Username Affect Popularity on Scratch?

I don't think that your name makes much of a difference really. It only helps people know who the person is.

I choose my name because it was the first name I made up while playing a game over a LAN connection with friends and now if they see what-the they generally know that it's me.

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

I'm not really proud of my username, but at least it's formal.

If I could change it, I'd go for something more casual.  wink
