problems recording sound in Scratch

I am having a problem recording sound in Scratch and I hope someone can suggest a solution.
My 5th grade class is working on individual Scratch projects in our computer lab. The project requires them to make short voice recordings (to name parts of a cell). I purchased six inexpensive Logitech microphones and tested all the mics on my teacher workstation (HP Compaq running Win XP Pro – just like all the student workstations). I plugged each mic into the front mic port. All the mics successfully recorded sound using Scratch on my computer. I also tested a few of them on one student computer and they worked on that one also.
However, when students tried recording sound on their computers, several of the mics did not pick up. I don’t think the problem is with the microphone or the computer because on some of the computers where the mic didn’t work in Scratch, I tried recording sound using Audacity and it worked. We could do that as a work around, but it involves a lot of extra steps for 5th graders.
I wonder if there is something I need to do in Scratch to activate the microphone? One student found that when he switched from Sound to Variables, his microphone began to pick up, but I tried on another computer and it didn't work.
Is there anything else I could try?

Re: problems recording sound in Scratch

Well, are they on the same network? If so, record the sound on one of the computers that work with the michrophone and save the sound. If that doesn't work, I don't know what else to tell you!

Retired from Scratch, but just the language itself. Not the forums.

Re: problems recording sound in Scratch

I was able to resolve some of my sound recording problems. Half of our lab computers are HP Compaq DC5800 desktops. On those the mic will not work in Scratch when plugged into the front mic port, but we could plug it into the back "line input" and a window opened that allowed selection of microphone or line input. Selecting microphone let them record into Scratch.
On the other computers (HP Compaq DC5700) the front mic port worked with Audacity, so students recorded in Audacity, exported to a file, then imported into Scratch. It was a longer process, but they learned how to export and import.
I still don't understand why the mics worked with Audacity and not with Scratch, but we were able to complete the project.

Re: problems recording sound in Scratch

Oftentimes I get this problem as well. My recorder isn't very reliable. After about 40 seconds of recording, the sound will get scratchy to the point where you can no longer understand it, but then about 10 seconds after it goes scratchy, it will get clear again.

It's very weird.

Re: problems recording sound in Scratch

The recordings on scratch are very poor sounding. I admit, I do have a computer microphone that isn't that good. I once recorded myself and I sounded like a space alien!!!!! I think that that the scratch team should update that when they make version 1.5.

<play sound[ correctly please!
