Re: New Scratch Tutorial needs feedback!

The video is quite helpful for people new to programming, but in my opinion it would be even better if you described a little more what the blocks does e.g.

"The we take the 'when space bar pressed' block which takes input from the user, you can change to another button on the keyboard by clicking here...."

Re: New Scratch Tutorial needs feedback!

I think it's pretty descriptive and useful. I like the narrator's voice too.

Re: New Scratch Tutorial needs feedback!

I think both videos are pretty good. The narration is clear, and I like how the video demonstrated everything step-by-step.

The addition of SFX in the second video I found to be a good and bad thing. In some cases, the SFX sound went well with what was going on in the video, but other times, they kind of threw me off (an example would be the SFX sound at around 0:20 when the user says "Click on the new sprite folder").

I think the video tutorial could be better by adding a small explanation of what some of the blocks do  - perhaps maybe this could be introduced at the end of the video with a 'try it out' segment, where viewers could be introduced to other options associated with the <when[--- ]key pressed[/blocks]> and <change[---]effect by(---)[/blocks] blocks and encouraged to 'try them out'.  wink

Re: New Scratch Tutorial needs feedback!

Both videos are pretty good.  They are clear, easy to understand and well paced.  I like the voiceover too.

That being said, there is room for improvement.  I thought the music was awful.  The driving, insistent, monotonous beat reminded me of News Program background music and I found it very grating.  Something more flowing and "new-age"ish would be better.

As for the sound effects on the second video - they didn't work for me very well.  Too much variation for no particular reason.  I think you should stick with a very simple sound effect for each different mouse action.  So one sound effect when the mouse is clicked down (maybe a clicking sound!) and another for when it is released (a slightly duller click sound).  That way the sounds would reinforce the information that is being supplied visually.

Re: New Scratch Tutorial needs feedback!

I'm actually quite inspired by what everyone's creating especially the Spaceship fly that was on the front page. So thanks for the tutorial - I just need to come up with a good idea to use.
