Might I suggest that a new feature called the 'User Journal' be created? It would be a little sidebar or something on each user's page where they can write things (projects they are currently working on, announcements, etc) for all to see. It could be like a 1000 or so character paragraph that everyone on Scratch can read.
I think this would really settle the issue that many people have with 'announcement projects' making the front page. Instead of making projects to tell people what you are up to in Scratch (Or if you are quitting/leaving/taking a break from Scratch), you could write it in the User Journal. Many users have been using the sidebar that they use to put where they live to put in short little comments, so I'm sure Scratchers would take full advantage of this feature if it were created
Please tell me what you think of this idea.
---UPDATE---
I created an example to show people what I'm trying to explain ^^

To clarify, here is what I had in mind...
That's just an example
To use the journal, you would simply click the text (But it must be on your own user page) and it would bring up the editing screen (Much like the project notes of a project, and how you change them online.) Then, once you're done editing it, you would click 'submit' and it would appear like shown above

Well I was hoping it would kind of just be a status, almost like a twitter-once the Journal is changed, would the comments be deleted?

The comments would just be like "lol" or spam most likely.

What do you think of the idea of having a Scratch project in that area instead of a text entry box? It could be a status report, or a list of interests, a biography, whatever you wanted. And you could have graphics and sound. Plus, people could leave comments on it. That's an idea that Larry828 and I have been kicking around for a while...
